Melka Mekerra Proprietary Red 2009 Front Label

Winemaker Notes

The 2009 exhibitis a pure expression of cabernet franc, one of our favorite varietals. We harvested the merlot and cabernet franc the last week of September under perfect conditions where warm nights provided full ripeness of the skin tannins. The aromatics are reminiscent of cherry, blueberry, violet, graphite and clove spice with a velvety texture boasting lots of ripe fruit character. This massive wine finishes with powerful integrated tannins and lasting berry flavors. This wine captures the uniqueness of La Mekerra vineyard soils.

Blend: 67% Cabernet Franc, 33% Merlot

The 2009 Metisse Knights Valley is a silkier, racier and more polished wine than the 2008 I tasted alongside it. Dark red berries, flowers, licorice, menthol and mocha are layered into a rich, textured finish. This is flat-out delicious. Here too, the style is opulent and full-bodied. All of the elements are beautifully in place. The 2009 is 65% Cabernet Franc and 35% Merlot aged in French oak barrels, 33% new. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024.

One of the world’s most classic and popular styles of red wine, Bordeaux-inspired blends have spread from their homeland in France to nearly every corner of the New World. Typically based on either Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot and supported by Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot, the best of these are densely hued, fragrant, full of fruit and boast a structure that begs for cellar time. Somm Secret—Blends from Bordeaux are generally earthier compared to those from the New World, which tend to be fruit-dominant.

A small and picturesque valley separating Napa Valley on its south border and Alexander Valley to its north, Knights Valley excels in similar varieties as the two aforementioned appellations, namely red Bordeaux varieties and blends, as well as Sauvignon blanc. Originally established by Beringer Vineyards, today several outstanding producers claim acreage here. The circadian cooling effects of the nearby Pacific Ocean create a nighttime respite for vineyards during the hot growing season.
