Winemaker Notes

Nebbiolo from less than a single hectare in front of the Molino winery. Before the law of the Crus in 2008, this parcel was known as Gancia. Calcareous soil with a high proportion of sand (20-30%). Maceration on the skins for 10 days in stainless steel, followed by a 20-day fermentation. Aged 24 months in lightly toasted and untoasted Allier French oak barriques (10% new). Approximately 350 cases produced each year. 1990 was the first vintage.

The 2020 Barolo Bricco Luciani is another fine effort from Molino. It shows a bit more new oak sheen than some of the other wines in the range, but not in a bad way. Crushed red berry fruit, spice, cedar, new leather and a kiss of French oak all run through this super-expressive, mid-weight Barolo. This sees six months in French oak, followed by 13-14 months in cask.

A perfumed nose with vibrant cherries, raspberries, red spices, dried rosemary and dried pomegranate skin. A lot of freshness and good energy with a medium body and ripe, well-integrated tannins that form the backbone of the wine. It shows beautiful fruit and it’s nicely toned and delicate, yet it remains dry and savory, highlighting its gastronomic aspect.

The Mauro Molino 2020 Barolo Bricco Luciani has a spicy nose with toasted oak, heritage rose, pastry cream that is connected to the oak and baked blueberry. However, the oak is driving the bus. The wine shows good acidity but remains very spice-driven throughout.

A medley of Marasca cherries, cinnamon stick, whole clove, new leather, cedar, and bay leaf greets the senses, unfurling into notes of turned earth as the wine opens. The palate is giving and lush, adorned with raspberry and strawberry compote and a hint of vanilla. Fine tannins and roasted oak notes contribute to an elegant tannic structure, making it a decidedly pretty wine.

Bright and expressive, boasting cherry, strawberry, rose and spice aromas and flavors. This red is supple in texture, with ample acidity and refined tannins. This is harmonious and approachable now, yet better in two to three years. Best from 2027 through 2043. 365 cases made, 130 cases imported.

Responsible for some of the most elegant and age-worthy wines in the world, Nebbiolo, named for the ubiquitous autumnal fog (called nebbia in Italian), is the star variety of northern Italy’s Piedmont region. Grown throughout the area, as well as in the neighboring Valle d’Aosta and Valtellina, it reaches its highest potential in the Piedmontese villages of Barolo, Barbaresco and Roero. Outside of Italy, growers are still very much in the experimentation stage but some success has been achieved in parts of California. Somm Secret—If you’re new to Nebbiolo, start with a charming, wallet-friendly, early-drinking Langhe Nebbiolo or Nebbiolo d'Alba.
