Winemaker Notes

Beautifully detailed aromas of summer ripened Santa Rosa plum, lilac blossom, vanilla custard and dried California coastal sagebrush define the 2019 Jack’s Cabin Zinfandel. There is an incredible intensity on the palate of brilliant candied red fruits and minerality that is nearly tamed by the plush texture, freshness and great focus of this delicious wine. Please enjoy over the next 6-8 years.

The 2019 Zinfandel Jack's Cabin Vineyard has a medium ruby color and scents of blackberries, blueberries, dried herbs, cracked pepper and tar. The full-bodied palate is concentrated and powerful with alluring herbal undertones, fresh acidity and a long, spicy finish.

From a site at nearly 1,000-feet in elevation, Jack's is an expansive location for these grapes, which includes 6% Petite Sirah. Juicy, soft and layered in blackberry, it offers great acidity and earthy undertones of mineral, while the tannins and oak are integrated and supportive.

The 2019 Zinfandel Jack's Cabin Vineyard showed nicely, with a plush, soft, forward style as well as terrific red plum and mulled cherry fruits. It's medium to full-bodied and has moderate acidity, a supple, elegant texture, and a great finish, all making for a brilliant Zinfandel.

Unapologetically bold, spice-driven and jammy, Zinfandel has secured its title as the darling of California vintners by adapting well to the state's diverse microclimates and landscapes. Born in Croatia, it later made its way to southern Italy where it was named Primitivo. Fortunately, the imperial nursery of Vienna catalogued specimens of the vine, and it later made its way to New England in 1829. Parading the true American spirit, Zinfandel found a new home in California during the Gold Rush of 1849. Somm Secret—California's ancient vines of Zinfandel are those that survived the neglect of Prohibition; today these vines produce the most concentrated, ethereal and complex examples.

High elevation vineyards—800 to 2,100 feet—on well-drained soils of red and brown clay loam, gravel and large rock outcroppings produce low yields of intense, high-quality fruit. Surrounded by Northern Sonoma County and overlapping Dry Creek Valley in its northwest corner, the Rockpile AVA produces some of California most powerful Zinfandel, Petit Sirah, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon based wines.
