Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

This Santa Lucia Highlands Chardonnay blend is reminiscent of pastry crust, macadamia nuts, pear and orange blossom. The palate is rich and zesty with lively acidity. Concentrated flavors of lemon cream, yellow plum and a touch of Tarragon linger on the finish.

The 2014 Chardonnay Santa Lucia Highlands was harvested early and brought up in 500-liter puncheons, with plenty of stirring, to build texture. Clean, straight and focused, with bright acidity, medium-bodied richness and notes of citrus blossom, crushed rock and white peach, this beauty is elegant, beautifully fresh and crisp on the palate. It's a great value and one to drink over the coming 2-3 years.

This bottling from Brack Mountain Wine Company shows butter, sea salt and caramel on the nose, balanced by tangerine and faint jasmine aromas. The wine is elegant and easy to like, with Meyer lemon and prominent-but-not- overpowering honey butter on the palate, and a pink lemonade touch that carries into the finish.

Matias wines express the intense character of vineyards farmed by the Pisoni and Franscioni families in the Santa Lucia Highlands. The wines are vinified in small lots with minimal intervention to protect the distinctive character of each vineyard source.

The delicate, hands-on winemaking of Matias includes native yeast fermentations, all gravity flow movement, and no fining or filtering. Tightly grained, French oak barrels elevate the natural aromatics of these intensely focused and well-structured wines.

One of the most popular and versatile white wine grapes, Chardonnay offers a wide range of flavors and styles depending on where it is grown and how it is made. While it tends to flourish in most environments, Chardonnay from its Burgundian homeland produces some of the most remarkable and longest lived examples. California produces both oaky, buttery styles and leaner, European-inspired wines. Somm Secret—The Burgundian subregion of Chablis, while typically using older oak barrels, produces a bright style similar to the unoaked style. Anyone who doesn't like oaky Chardonnay would likely enjoy Chablis.

Perhaps the most highly regarded appellation within Monterey County, Santa Lucia Highlands AVA benefits from a combination of warm morning sunshine and brisk afternoon breezes, allowing grapes to ripen slowly and fully. The result is concentrated, flavorful wines that retain their natural acidity. Wineries here do not shy away from innovation, and place a high priority on sustainable viticultural practices.

The climatic conditions here are perfectly suited to the production of ripe, rich Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. These Burgundian varieties dominate an overwhelming percentage of plantings, though growers have also found success with Syrah, Riesling and Pinot Gris.
