Winemaker Notes

Very light red with swirls of black, a crimson robe and ruby hues. Aromas garrigue, black berries, sage, leather, cherries and granite. A refreshing bright fruity wine that you can drink all day. Delicious and spicy fruit surrounded by youthful tannins and bright acidity. The overlying presence of Cinsault and its playful nature create flavors that bring back memories of carefree days lounging in the south of France.

Blend: 85% Cinsault, 15% Syrah

The 2019 Cinsault is an absolutely delicious wine. I would prefer to drink it on the young side, while the red berry fruit remains vibrant. Sweet, perfumed floral accents add lift and a real feeling of sensuality. This light to medium-bodied red is inviting and refreshing from the very first taste.

COMMENTARY: The 2019 Margerum Cinsault is an excellent alternative to Gamay or other summertime wines. This wine drinks soft and pleasingly. TASTING NOTES: This wine exhibits bright aromas and flavors of boysenberries and blackberries. Enjoy it as a quaffing wine with a light and easy meal. (Tasted: June 25, 2020, San Francisco, CA)

Done right, Cinsault is a glou-glou grape at its finest. This bottling shows rose, bubblegum, red plum and lavender on the broad nose. The palate offers strawberry and more bubblegum flavors, with just enough spice and herb to keep it intellectual.

A variety you don't see often on its own (although it's becoming more common), the 2019 Cinsault Margerum Estate Vineyard offers a Grenache-like bouquet of raspberries, black cherries, peppery herbs, and sappy flowers. Medium-bodied, elegant, and seamless on the palate, it shines for its balance, purity of fruit, and sheer drinkability.

A charmer in the Southern Rhône Valley, Cinsault thrives in any hot and windy climate, and finds success in many other countries. It is a parent grape alongside Pinot Noir, of South Africa’s acclaimed red grape, Pinotage. Somm Secret—Given its relatively long history in California, Cinsualt is often “hidden” in the Zinfandel blends of Sonoma and Contra Costa Counties. Historically planted alongside Zinfandel (with Petite Sirah and Mourvedre) in the same vineyard, Cinsault is now an essential part of many “field blends.”
