Winemaker Notes

Sourced exclusively from the iconic Sanford & Benedict vineyard in the heart of the Sta. Rita Hills Appellation of Santa Barbara county, this exotic cool climate, aromatic Viognier was produced by hand harvesting meticulously farmed grapes, whole cluster pressed, and fermented using a combination of stainless steel tanks and French oak barrels. After aging in barrell this VIognier both increased in varietal character and gained concentration on the palate. This wine will pair well with Asian and Mediterranean dishes.

A potpourri on the palate, the 2012 Luke Donald Viognier explodes with flying peach skin and fragrant flowers, this is good stuff and amazingly balanced for such an intense wine. Deep straw, yellow in color; loaded with core fruit skin and flowers in the nose; long, lush and layered on the palate; exotic in its flavors; beautiful and stylish in the aftertaste.

Luke Donald Collection Winery Image
The creation of Luke Donald Collection wines has its origins in a longstanding friendship between top-ranked pro golfer Luke Donald and fine wine professional Bill Terlato of the family-owned Terlato Wine Group.  Whether on the golf course or in the vineyard, both men share a similar passion for excellence.  Luke Donald plays an active role in crafting the wines that bear his name. His personal involvement in the blending makes the wines original and unique; wines that best reflect his own personality and style.

The largest and perhaps most varied of California’s wine-growing regions, the Central Coast produces a good majority of the state's wine. This vast district stretches from San Francisco all the way to Santa Barbara along the coast, and reaches inland nearly all the way to the Central Valley.

Encompassing an extremely diverse array of climates, soil types and wine styles, it contains many smaller sub-AVAs, including San Francisco Bay, Monterey, the Santa Cruz Mountains, Paso Robles, Edna Valley, Santa Ynez Valley and Santa Maria Valley.

While the region could probably support almost any major grape varietiy, it is famous for a few. Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel are among the major ones. The Central Coast is home to many of the state's small, artisanal wineries crafting unique, high-quality wines, as well as larger producers also making exceptional wines.

Full-figured and charmingly floral, Viognier is one of the most important white grapes of the northern Rhône where it is used both to produce single varietal wines and as an important blending grape. Look for great New World examples from California, Oregon, Washington and cooler parts of Australia. Somm Secret—Viognier plays a surprisingly important role in the red wines of Côte Rôtie in the northern Rhône. About 5% Viognier is typically co-fermented with the Syrah in order to stabilize the color, and as an added benefit, add a subtle perfume.
