Winemaker Notes

The color is a deep violet with brilliant purple edges. The bouquet displays lifted fresh cracked pepper with sweet ripe blackberry, plums and mulberries, with hints of chocolate and dusty oak.

The palate is full bodied with lovely plum and blackberry following through from the nose. This wine is displaying quite amazing intensity of fruit. The fine tannins draw the flavors across the palate creating an incredible crescendo of flavors which remain in your mouth minutes after drinking.

This is an immaculately structured and seamless wine, one of the best produced at Leeuwin Estate.

In keeping with its Western Australian origins, this is a medium-bodied Shiraz, without the overbearing ripeness found from some other regions. Black cherry fruit is accented by hints of hints of mint or eucalyptus, while the tannins are silky and fine. Drink it now and over the next several years.

2007 Margaret River Art Series Shiraz A velvety Aussie shiraz, this wine cuts its unctuous richness with subtle spice and mineral acidity. It hints at the black-pepper drive syrah often gains in the Northern Rhône. Bottle age should bring that pepper and minerality to the fore.

Marked by an unmistakable deep purple hue and savory aromatics, Syrah makes an intense, powerful and often age-worthy red. Native to the Northern Rhône, Syrah achieves its maximum potential in the steep village of Hermitage and plays an important component in the Red Rhône Blends of the south, adding color and structure to Grenache and Mourvèdre. Syrah is the most widely planted grape of Australia and is important in California and Washington. Sommelier Secret—Such a synergy these three create together, the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre trio often takes on the shorthand term, “GSM.”

Western Australia

Home to some of Australia’s most elegant and long-lived red and white wines, Margaret River is situated in the farthest reaches of Western Australia. Relatively warm and dry, the region is cooled by breezes from the Indian Ocean. Margaret River takes some inspiration from Bordeaux, producing top-quality Cabernet Sauvignons and Bordeaux Blends with firm structure, mouthwatering acidity, balanced alcohol and notes of herbs and spice. For white wines, refreshing blends of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon as well as complex, age-worthy Chardonnays are regional specialties.
