Winemaker Notes

An energetic and vibrant nose bursting with lime, lemon and a hint of green apple. The aromatics of fennel seed, Thai basil, and lime leaf add an extra and intriguing layer of complexity. Delicately textured, yet equally exuberant, the front palate is citrus focused, and there is minerality and brine-like structure providing elegance and finesse, leading to a finely boned acid frame with a talc-like finish.

Lime sherbet-meets-beeswax-meets-kerosene on this West Coast Riesling. It’s dry, ultrafresh and tongue-tingling. It lacks a little flavor depth and length but is highly foodfriendly with seafood particularly.

I have a soft spot for this wine – it’s from a region not renown for riesling; I love the green bottle and the John Olsen painting adorning it. It’s also a lovely drink. Fragrant with lemon blossom and jasmine and lightly flavoured with limes and lemons, green apple and fresh herbs. Not at all fruity, it’s dry with mouth-watering acidity, and there’s a cooling stoniness too.

The 2023 Art Series Riesling marks another lovely release of this wine. The 2023 season in Margaret River was even and mild—superb, in short—and the whites that I have seen released so far express the conditions so eloquently. Here, the wine is aromatically laden with sea salt, chalk, brine, soft leafy herbs, scratched lime, green apple and jasmine flowers. It is plump without being pudgy, soft while retaining form and line, and perhaps most importantly, it is delicious. A lovely wine. 12% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Rating: 91+

Riesling possesses a remarkable ability to reflect the character of wherever it is grown while still maintaining its identity. A regal variety of incredible purity and precision, this versatile grape can be just as enjoyable dry or sweet, young or old, still or sparkling and can age longer than nearly any other white variety. Somm Secret—Given how difficult it is to discern the level of sweetness in a Riesling from the label, here are some clues to find the dry ones. First, look for the world “trocken.” (“Halbtrocken” or “feinherb” mean off-dry.) Also a higher abv usually indicates a drier Riesling.

Home to some of Australia’s most elegant and long-lived red and white wines, Margaret River is situated in the farthest reaches of Western Australia. Relatively warm and dry, the region is cooled by breezes from the Indian Ocean. Margaret River takes some inspiration from Bordeaux, producing top-quality Cabernet Sauvignons and Bordeaux Blends with firm structure, mouthwatering acidity, balanced alcohol and notes of herbs and spice. For white wines, refreshing blends of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon as well as complex, age-worthy Chardonnays are regional specialties.
