Winemaker Notes

The "Art Series" represents Leeuwin’s most opulent and age worthy wines from each vintage. They are identified with paintings commissioned from leading contemporary Australian artists.

Blackcurrants, cherries, dried cranberries and Satsuma plums feature on the nose at the forefront. Bay leaf, cinnamon, cardamom, cedar and clove combine with heightened lavender notes and hints of fresh tobacco. The palate is fine with a mineral thread. It is elegant and delicately layered. Blackcurrant and cherries feature again with a subtle cassis edge. The mid palate has supple flesh with cocoa, coffee bean and cassia leading to a graphite line and powdery tannins.

Blend: 97% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Malbec

There’s sunglow to this wine’s flavors, as if mirroring the cool, sunny autumn days in Margaret River that extended the growing season in 2015. There’s nothing dimpled about the fruit; it’s just warm and plump, with tannins you can breathe and a palpable bristle of energy. The luscious blackberry fruit floods the crunchy acidity that keeps the wine bright and zesty. Though the wine spent 22 months in French oak, the barrel influence is apparent only in its textural harmony and structural completion. Set for long aging.

Cigar box, vanilla, sage and bay leaf notes may be found on the nose of the 2015 Art Series Cabernet Sauvignon. It's intensely flavored, medium to full-bodied and firmly structured but ripe, with fine-grained tannins and a long, mouthwatering finish.

A noble variety bestowed with both power and concentration, Cabernet Sauvignon enjoys success all over the globe, its best examples showing potential to age beautifully for decades. Cabernet Sauvignon flourishes in Bordeaux's Medoc where it is often blended with Merlot and smaller amounts of some combination of Cabernet Franc, Malbecand Petit Verdot. In the Napa Valley, ‘Cab’ is responsible for some of the world’s most prestigious, age-worthy and sought-after “cult” wines. Somm Secret—DNA profiling in 1997 revealed that Cabernet Sauvignon was born from a spontaneous crossing of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc in 17th century southwest France.

Home to some of Australia’s most elegant and long-lived red and white wines, Margaret River is situated in the farthest reaches of Western Australia. Relatively warm and dry, the region is cooled by breezes from the Indian Ocean. Margaret River takes some inspiration from Bordeaux, producing top-quality Cabernet Sauvignons and Bordeaux Blends with firm structure, mouthwatering acidity, balanced alcohol and notes of herbs and spice. For white wines, refreshing blends of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon as well as complex, age-worthy Chardonnays are regional specialties.
