I loved the 2021 Estate Syrah Blend, which is incredibly perfumed and layered, with a kirsch and blackberry-driven fruit profile as well as notes of spring flowers, ground pepper, and incense. Medium to full-bodied, ultra-pure, and utterly seamless on the palate, this incredible Syrah will drink nicely for 10-15 years. As usual, this has a certain Côte Rôtie-like elegance and floral character that I adore. The blend is 80% Syrah, 10% Grenache, 7% Cinsault, and the rest Roussanne, all from the estate Adams Ranch Vineyard on the west side of Paso Robles, with the élevage being 20 months in new and used barrels.

With bold fruit flavors and accents of sweet spice, Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre form the base of the classic Rhône Red Blend, while Carignan, Cinsault and Counoise often come in to play. Though they originated from France’s southern Rhône Valley, with some creative interpretation, Rhône blends have also become popular in other countries. Somm Secret—Putting their own local spin on the Rhône Red Blend, those from Priorat often include Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. In California, it is not uncommon to see Petite Sirah make an appearance.
Growing on high elevation bedrock slopes, the vineyards of Paso Robles Willow Creek AVA sit at between 960 and 1,900 feet in elevation.
