Winemaker Notes

Aromatically compelling, the 2021 Laurel Glen Counterpoint bursts from the glass with fresh-picked blueberries, toffee, and cedarwood. Supple and finely textured, with layers of boysenberry preserves, ripe plum, cinnamon, and nutmeg. The wine has great freshness and depth, juicy acidity, and firm and velvety tannins.

A great complement to your next BBQ! Try this wine with a burger or steak or lasagna.

Quite layered, dark and flavorful, medium-bodied and approachable. Nicely rich in black cherry, black olive, and cocoa aromas, then more dark fruit, dark chocolate and mineral accents on the palate. It’s moderately tannic yet still creamy and velvety in texture.
  • 92
Bright aromas of chocolate-covered cherries, mint and pencil shavings jump from the glass of this Cabernet. On the palate, this wine delivers plush, age-worthy tannin, supple acidity and flavors of currant, cocoa powder, black pepper and sage that dance along the finish.
  • 91
The inky red 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Counterpoint is nicely detailed with aromas of red plum, menthol, leather, and pine. Full-bodied, it offers a fleshy, ripe feel, with chalky, building tannins and an even finish. It’s a ripe and savory wine to drink over the coming 8-10 years.
  • 90
Shows enticing notes of blackberry and boysenberry reduction at the core, supported by a graphite edge. Singed vanilla and licorice snap accents add energy on the finish. Drink now through 2030.

A noble variety bestowed with both power and concentration, Cabernet Sauvignon enjoys success all over the globe, its best examples showing potential to age beautifully for decades. Cabernet Sauvignon flourishes in Bordeaux's Medoc where it is often blended with Merlot and smaller amounts of some combination of Cabernet Franc, Malbecand Petit Verdot. In the Napa Valley, ‘Cab’ is responsible for some of the world’s most prestigious, age-worthy and sought-after “cult” wines. Somm Secret—DNA profiling in 1997 revealed that Cabernet Sauvignon was born from a spontaneous crossing of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc in 17th century southwest France.

Defined more by altitude than geographical outline, the Sonoma Mountain appellation occupies elevations between 400 and 1,200 feet on the northern and eastern slopes of the actual Sonoma Mountain and is part of the greater Sonoma Valley appellation. The mountain reaches 2,400 feet; its hills separate the cooling winds of Petaluma Gap from the Sonoma Valley.

On a cooler western flank, Pinot noir, Chardonnay and Syrah enjoy a great deal of success. Vineyards on its warmer, eastern side, interspersed with heavily forested areas, tend to include Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, Zinfandel, and Syrah. Given its complexity of topography and mesoclimates, Sonoma Mountain excels with a wide range of grape varieties.
