Winemaker Notes

This 2013 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon displays the exceptional terroir of the winery's 53 acres of hillside vineyards. This wine is multi-layered with notes of plum, black currant, and blackberry fruit. It is a balanced wine with a supple mouthfeel. An approachable wine in its youth, this Cabernet will only gain in complexity and will drink well for the next 15-20 years.

Professional Ratings

The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate showcases the brilliant Cabernet Sauvignon that can be achieved in Alexander Valley. With loads of plum, blackberry and cassis fruit, noticeable but sweet tannin, and a multilayered mouthfeel, the wine has attractive suppleness and thrilling levels of extract and richness that make for a big, boisterous, yet promising and potentially long-lived Cabernet Sauvignon. This should drink well for 20+ years. Range: 91-93 Points.

Lancaster Estate, California
Lancaster Estate Winery Video
Lancaster Estate is a vineyard and winery in the classic Bordeaux tradition. Lancaster Estate’s Alexander Valley appellation luxury wines are limited–edition, 100 percent estate–grown Cabernet family varietals from our 53 acre hillside property. The winery focuses on one wine per year, a blend which is entirely vintage and estate–reflective.

Located at the southern tip of the Alexander Valley, Lancaster Estate rests in the foothills of the western Mayacamas Mountains at the confluence of the Chalk Hill and Knights Valley appellations. Within the rolling hills of this “golden triangle,” an ideal climate of warm days and cool nights combines with the region's myriad soil types to produce red wines of uncommon grace and style.

A noble variety bestowed with both power and concentration, Cabernet Sauvignon enjoys success all over the globe, its best examples showing potential to age beautifully for decades. Cabernet Sauvignon flourishes in Bordeaux's Medoc where it is often blended with Merlot and smaller amounts of some combination of Cabernet Franc, Malbecand Petit Verdot. In the Napa Valley, ‘Cab’ is responsible for some of the world’s most prestigious, age-worthy and sought-after “cult” wines. Somm Secret—DNA profiling in 1997 revealed that Cabernet Sauvignon was born from a spontaneous crossing of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc in 17th century southwest France.

Alexander Valley Wine

Sonoma County, California

Nearly a northern extension of Napa Valley, Alexander Valley starts just north of the small, Knights Valley, and is just a few minutes drive from the Napa town of Calistoga. It is Sonoma County’s hottest AVA. But the Russian River, which runs through the valley, creates cooler pockets and its soft, alluvial soil is ideal for grape growing, especially Cabernet Sauvignon. In fact, some believe that Alexander Valley Cabernets truly rival the best from Napa Valley and many of the heavy-hitter producers have largely invested here.

In addition to Cabernet Sauvignon, which makes up over 50% of plantings, Merlot and old vine Zinfandel thrive here. Ample, fleshy Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc dominate white wine production. Some old-vine plantings of Grenache have also been discovered and more recent experiments with Sangiovese and Barbera show great promise.
