Winemaker Notes

WS 93
Wine Spectator
Tightly wound and firmly concentrated, it opens up to unveil a wealth of rich, exotic spices, with beefy bay leaf, earth and mineral scents to a dense, chewy core of beefy currant, blackberry and new leather, finishing with espresso, mocha and vanilla flavors that make it quite enticing. It should only get better in the next year.
RP 90
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
Although closed, this 2001 (from a 4-acre, east-facing vineyard on Mt. Veeder) began to strut its stuff after extended aeration, so decanting is recommended. It is a tight but promising, saturated dark ruby/purple-colored Syrah offering a sweet perfume of plums, blackberries, and forest floor. This attractive, medium to full-bodied effort reveals admirable structure, moderately high tannin, and impressive depth as well as length.

Lagier Meredith, California
Lagier Meredith makes only Syrah and they use only their own grapes. Their wine owes its character to the place where the grapes are grown. It is truly a vineyard wine. (Which is not to belittle Steve Legier's winemaking ability...he just knows when to intervene and when not to.)

The flavor of the wine is reminiscent of the Northern Rhône in its red berry and white pepper aromas, but it has more extract and body. It has intense flavor and deep color but, unlike some other red wines, where big color usually means big tannin, Lagier Meredith Syrah is not harshly tannic so it drinks well when it is young, but it is also expected to age well.

Undoubtedly proving its merit over and over, Napa Valley is a now a leading force in the world of prestigious red wine regions. Though Cabernet Sauvignon dominates Napa Valley, other red varieties certainly thrive here. Important but often overlooked include Merlot and other Bordeaux varieties well-regarded on their own as well as for their blending capacities. Very old vine Zinfandel represents an important historical stronghold for the region and Pinot noir is produced in the cooler southern parts, close to the San Pablo Bay.

Perfectly situated running north to south, the valley acts as a corridor, pulling cool, moist air up from the San Pablo Bay in the evenings during the hot days of the growing season, which leads to even and slow grape ripening. Furthermore the valley claims over 100 soil variations including layers of volcanic, gravel, sand and silt—a combination excellent for world-class red wine production.
