Winemaker Notes

Raspberry, Bing cherry and vanilla cola aromatics lead the nose and are harmonized with a refined spiciness. Delicate and balanced, with opulent plum and juicy raspberry fruit converging to complete a seamless flavor experience. Structured tannins are on the forefront leading to a sustained and unctuous finish.

Critical Acclaim

WS 93
Wine Spectator
Pure and juicy, with an initial burst of fresh, snappy raspberry that offers a unique mix of density and richness. The flavors dance across the palate.
RP 92
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
More rich and weighty, with gorgeously ripe black cherries, plum, licorice, violets, menthol and toast, the 2011 Pinot Noir 4 Barrel is medium to full-bodied, deeply fruited and textured, with knockout richness and depth. While falling toward the larger end of the Pinot Noir spectrum, this is no floozy and has fantastic purity and precision.

A standout region for its decidedly Californian take on Burgundian varieties, the Russian River Valley is named for the eponymous river that flows through it. While there are warm pockets of the AVA, it is mostly a cool-climate growing region thanks to breezes and fog from the nearby Pacific Ocean.

Chardonnay and Pinot Noir reign supreme in Russian River, with the best examples demonstrating a unique combination of richness and restraint. The cool weather makes Russian River an ideal AVA for sparkling wine production, utilizing the aforementioned varieties. Zinfandel also performs exceptionally well here. Within the Russian River Valley lie the smaller appellations of Chalk Hill and Green Valley. The former, farther from the ocean, is relatively warm, with a focus on red and white Bordeaux varieties. The latter is the coolest, foggiest parcel of the Russian River Valley and is responsible for outstanding Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
