Winemaker Notes

The potential of the 2017 vintage is evident through bright aromas of Anjou pear and white peach with an exotic back note of mango. A light framework of French oak adds texture, layered with crisp freshness from stainless steel. Distinguished by a viscous, mouth-watering entry, the interplay of citrus, Anjou pear and white fig flavors are seamlessly woven toward a focused yet lively finish. Ripe fruit flavors are refined by a persistent minerality that suggests this wine will pair seamlessly with a broad range of cuisines.

The Pont de Chevalier is made to deliver sophistication and complexity while still retaining all the energy of Sauvignon Blanc. At the table, its richness will pair perfectly with pork—Asian-style with ginger and star anise, or French-inspired with mushrooms, Dijon, and tarragon. A perfect partner with seafood, try this with oysters and mignonette, lobster ravioli, or crab cakes.

The 2017 Sauvignon Blanc Pont de Chevalier offers very pretty aromas of beeswax, jasmine and papaya over a core of warm peach, lime peel, crushed stone and kiwi tart. Medium to full-bodied, it's rounded and very expressive in the mouth with honeyed tinges and oodles of floral character, framed with tangy acidity and finishing textured. I appreciate the balance of expressive fruit and oak influence in this Sauvignon Blanc.

Capable of a vast array of styles, Sauvignon Blanc is a crisp, refreshing variety that equally reflects both terroir and varietal character. Though it can vary depending on where it is grown, a couple of commonalities always exist—namely, zesty acidity and intense aromatics. This variety is of French provenance. Somm Secret—Along with Cabernet Franc, Sauvignon Blanc is a proud parent of Cabernet Sauvignon. That green bell pepper aroma that all three varieties share is no coincidence—it comes from a high concentration of pyrazines (herbaceous aromatic compounds) inherent to each member of the family.

A small and picturesque valley separating Napa Valley on its south border and Alexander Valley to its north, Knights Valley excels in similar varieties as the two aforementioned appellations, namely red Bordeaux varieties and blends, as well as Sauvignon blanc. Originally established by Beringer Vineyards, today several outstanding producers claim acreage here. The circadian cooling effects of the nearby Pacific Ocean create a nighttime respite for vineyards during the hot growing season.
