Winemaker Notes

Our inaugural, limited production release showcases our low-yielding, historic vineyard estates in the cool climate and ancient soils of Victoria. These much-heralded microclimates display tremendous colour, ripe, red fruit intensity and a powerfully lush and dense texture that is simply unforgettable. Available September 2003.

KIRRALAA "Indelible Reserve" Shiraz represents the shared aspirations of our two families to grow, harvest and craft a limited quantity of world-class quality Shiraz from our finest vineyard estates.

Our signatures on the bottle affirm that it achieves our personal standards of winegrowing excellence. We are proud to share with you the inaugural vintage of our KIRRALAA "Indelible Reserve" Shiraz.

Kirralaa, Australia
A partnership in winemaking between California's Robert Mondavi and Australia's Rosemount Estate, Kirralaa is one of the two labels produced by this joint venture. Adopting a rule that neither company was allowed to work in its own backyard, Kirralaa was made in Australia by the Mondavi team lead by winemaker Tim Mondavi.

An Australian word for star, Kirralaa (wines) "break the status quo" in winemaking and display bold colors, stunning, rich flavors, and unmatched varietal complexity and refinement. Farmed in the finest regions of Australia: Coonawarra, Barossa Valley, and McLaren Vale.

Though Syrah originated in the Rhône Valley of France, Australia is home to the oldest Syrah (called Shiraz here) vines on the planet. Found in Australia’s Barossa Valley, where phylloxera has never threated viticulture, these ancient vines are between 140 to 175 years old!

Having brought fame and merit to the country’s wine scene since the early 1950s, namely via the debut of Penfolds Grange, today Syrah (Shiraz) claims rank as the most widely planted grape in Australia. In fact, the amount of land dedicated to Shiraz in Australia is now almost equivalent to what it is in France. Australian Shiraz has its own personality with flavors and aromas of intense blackberry, fruitcake, menthol, tobacco leaf and umami. Conveniently one can find great Australian Shiraz at a variety of price points but the very best will be dense, gloriously complex and capable of long aging.
