Winemaker Notes

Blend: 98% Cabernet Sauvignon 2% Petit Verdot

Kenwood 2003 Artist Series Cabernet Sauvignon is an opulent wine of great depth and concentration. This wine displays balance and refinement with aromas of raspberries, currants and dark chocolate. The wine is approachable when young, yet capable of aging gracefully for many years to come.

The Art: Vincent van Gogh, born in Groot-Zundert, Holland, was a post-Impressionist whose work powerfully influenced modern Expressionism, Fauvism and early abstraction. His unique fusion of form and content is powerful and imaginative as characterized through this work "The Starry Night." Color is the chief character of expression throughout this piece and is portrayed through his swirling brushstrokes, deep color, and dramatic use of form and line.

While Sonoma County is acclaimed—and rightfully so—for its Chardonnays, Pinot Noirs, and Zinfandels, it also produces exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon. Of the region’s 18 American Viticultural Areas, only a handful produce top-notch Cabernet Sauvignon. These appellations include Alexander Valley, Knights Valley, Sonoma Valley and Dry Creek Valley. Sonoma Cabernet Sauvignons made in these appellations can offer a complex array of aromas and flavors. Fruit notes such as blackberry, blackcurrant, cassis, black cherry and raspberry often are accompanied by hints of graphite, dusty earth, cigar box, toast and vanilla. The varietal has a rich history in Sonoma, and some of these Cabernet Sauvignons and Cabernet-based blends rival the best from Napa Valley.
