Winemaker Notes

Showing medium intensity and bright clarity in appearance, the Russian River Valley Pinot Noir displays a lovely ruby color. Thedeveloping nose is of medium intensity with aromas of black cherry, an earthy black tea, dried mushrooms, dried red fruits, warm spices and faint dried herbs. The palate shows medium body, intensity, acidity and medium plus length. Medium tanninintensity is displayed with a delicate tea-like grip. Candied red fruits, black tea and an earthy, fall-like, dried leaf note lead to atoasty/smokey tobacco finish. This wine shows classic soft, subtle and delicate characteristics from what appears to be a very elegant and feminine vintage.

Sourced from four sites including the dry-farmed Hallberg Vineyard in Green Valley, this lasts on the clean red cherry flavor of Russian River pinot noir picked at moderate ripeness. It shows some delicacy in a rose petal aroma and sandy tannins that focus the fruit. With a day of air, an alcohol warmth begins to show through, suggesting that it’s a pinot noir to drink on the young side, while it’s still juicy and ebullient.

While the Russian River Valley is a large appellation with multiple climate zones and soil types, it is best known for cool-climate varieties, with Pinot Noir as the most celebrated. The grapes benefit from a reliable late afternoon flow of Pacific Ocean fog through the Petaluma Gap and along the Russian River Valley that ensures slow and steady ripening and the preservation of grape acidity. Today many of California’s most highly regarded Pinot Noir vineyards are in the Russian River Valley, along with its sub-appellation, Green Valley.

Historically Russian River Valley Pinot Noirs had bright red fruit and delicate earthy, mineral notes. But changes in viticultural and winemaking practices have led to stylistic changes in some of the region’s wines. Adjustments to canopy management, among other techniques, have resulted in riper fruit and bolder wines as well. These show flavors of black cherry, blackberry, cola, spice and darker, loamy earth tones, accenting traditional Pinot Noir notes of strawberry, raspberry and light cherry.
