Winemaker Notes

Sings in the glass immediately. Much like its sister, El Alma, it has delicate earth and herbal notes. Cacao, black plum, espresso, dust and black licorice. It is a completely different beast on the palate. It is juicy and packed with mouthwatering fruit. Cabernet sauvignon thrived in 2011 and it shows immediately on the mid palate and long lingering finish. At 95% Cabernet Sauvignon, it is apparent that the "king of grapes" didn't need any help from its Bordeaux brethren to fill any holes in tis vintage. This Cabernet Sauvignon fires on all cylinders. It has monstrous intensity of fruit and palate filling chalky tannin. A sparkling and pristine presentation of Desafio.

Blend: 95% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Merlot, 2% Petit Verdot

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
Offering up beautiful Cabernet character, the 2011 El Desafio de Jonata is gorgeous and very Bordeaux like given its density and tannin profile. Blackberry, currants, spice and floral nuances all emerge from the glass and this elegant, layered 2011 has full-bodied richness and depth. Give it another 2-3 years and drink it through 2026. Drink 2016-2026.

From the coolest vintage in the past two decades, the 2011 El Desafio de Jonata is a Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated effort that includes 3% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot. It gives up lots of blackberries, leafy herbs, cedar and damp underbrush in its medium to full-bodied, lightly textured, elegant style. It has fine tannin, is impeccably balanced, and has beautiful length. This was a difficult vintage for the region yet there were some beautiful wines made, and this is one of them.

Ranging from cool and foggy in the west to warm and dry in the east, the Santa Ynez Valley is a climatically diverse growing area. The most expansive AVA within the larger Santa Barbara County region, Santa Ynez is also home to a wide variety of soil types and geographical features. The appellation is further divided into four distinct sub-AVAs—Sta. Rita Hills, Ballard Canyon, Los Olivos District and Happy Canyon—each with its own defining characteristics.

A wide selection of grapes is planted here—more than sixty different varieties, and counting. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir dominate in the chilly west, while Zinfandel, Rhône blends, and Bordeaux blends rule the arid east. Syrah is successful at both ends of the valley, with a lean and peppery, Old-World sensibility closer to the coast and lush berry fruit further inland.

A noble variety bestowed with both power and concentration, Cabernet Sauvignon enjoys success all over the globe, its best examples showing potential to age beautifully for decades. Cabernet Sauvignon flourishes in Bordeaux's Medoc where it is often blended with Merlot and smaller amounts of some combination of Cabernet Franc, Malbecand Petit Verdot. In the Napa Valley, ‘Cab’ is responsible for some of the world’s most prestigious, age-worthy and sought-after “cult” wines. Somm Secret—DNA profiling in 1997 revealed that Cabernet Sauvignon was born from a spontaneous crossing of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc in 17th century southwest France.
