Winemaker Notes

Black and red currant emerge in the nose as hints of sweet, dry basil and black pepper cavort their way upwards. Herbal hues of cassis bud and thyme frame the flavors of dark chocolate, rich cherry, and sweet earth. In the background, complex strokes of fresh violet and graphite unfold as it develops in the glass. Supply structured tannins pirouette with the acidity, leading towards an extended and robust finish. There is a power and a concentration to the wine inviting the drinker to take another sip.

Varietal Composition: 60% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon

Professional Ratings

  • 94
A blend of merlot and cabernet sauvignon that delivers green-olive, currant and tobacco character. Medium-to full-bodied, silky and refined. Shows focus and beauty. A very calm and serene red. Traditional. Drink or hold.

Medium to deep ruby in color, the 2016 Belle Cousine is composed of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Sauvignon. It has scents of fresh red and black currants, mint chocolate, cedar, dried herbs and graphite with accents of dusty earth. Medium to full-bodied, it’s elegantly styled in the mouth with restrained but bright, minerally fruits, a finely chalky texture and great freshness, finishing long and lifted.

One of the world’s most classic and popular styles of red wine, Bordeaux-inspired blends have spread from their homeland in France to nearly every corner of the New World. Typically based on either Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot and supported by Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot, the best of these are densely hued, fragrant, full of fruit and boast a structure that begs for cellar time. Somm Secret—Blends from Bordeaux are generally earthier compared to those from the New World, which tend to be fruit-dominant.

Known for elegant wines that combine power and finesse, Carneros is set in the rolling hills that straddle the southernmost parts of both Sonoma and Napa counties. The cooling winds from the abutting San Pablo Bay, combined with lots of midday California sunshine, create an ideal environment for producing wines with a perfect balance of crisp acidity and well-ripened fruit.

This cooler pocket of California lends itself to growing Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Syrah. Carneros is an important source of sparkling wines made in the style of Champagne as well.
