Winemaker Notes

Made exclusively from the Old Master Vineyard. Like an elegant gentleman, reserved with charm and flare. An aromatic expression of spiced herbs and forest floor fold into layers of accessible fruit, finishing with structured fine tannins. Delicious now and for decades to come.

A blend of 60% Cabernet Franc and 40% Merlot raised in 80% new French oak, the 220-case 2014 Hudson Old Master offers a Pauillac-like (although Lee Hudson commented that the Right Bank was the idea) bouquet of lead pencil, graphite, tobacco leaf and assorted darker fruits. With medium to full-bodied richness, present tannin, and rich, layered, elegant personality, it’s another terrific wine from this estate. Rating: 93+

Composed of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon and 35% Merlot, the 2014 Old Master Proprietary Red has a deep garnet-purple color and exotic spice-laced nose over notions of cassis, wild blueberries, preserved plums and dusty earth, plus wafts of cedar chest and potpourri. The medium to full-bodied palate delivers spectacular energy, featuring taut, muscular black and blue fruit with a firm, grainy backbone and plenty of freshness, finishing with great length and a spicy kick. One of the world’s most classic and popular styles of red wine, Bordeaux-inspired blends have spread from their homeland in France to nearly every corner of the New World. Typically based on either Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot and supported by Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot, the best of these are densely hued, fragrant, full of fruit and boast a structure that begs for cellar time. Somm Secret—Blends from Bordeaux are generally earthier compared to those from the New World, which tend to be fruit-dominant.

California

Known for elegant wines that combine power and finesse, Carneros is set in the rolling hills that straddle the southernmost parts of both Sonoma and Napa counties. The cooling winds from the abutting San Pablo Bay, combined with lots of midday California sunshine, create an ideal environment for producing wines with a perfect balance of crisp acidity and well-ripened fruit.

This cooler pocket of California lends itself to growing Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Syrah. Carneros is an important source of sparkling wines made in the style of Champagne as well.
