    Winemaker Notes

Merlots rich fruit character and soft, silky tannins have made it one of the most popular red wines in the U.S. That popularity has resulted in Merlot being planted extensively in areas better suited to other varieties. Thankfully, eastern Washingtons long days and cool nights make it the perfect place to grow Merlot. Our Barrel Select Merlot is medium-bodied, with a firm structure. Aromas are of black olive, cassis and berry, with a rustic, earthy note in the background. The wines richness carries the black cherry, plum and clove spice flavors on the palate, and its all complemented by lingering toasty oak in the finish. The winemakers recommend pairing it with salami, nicoise salads, tapenade or simple grilled lamb with Herbes de Provence.

The Hogue Cellars, founded in 1982 by Mike and Gary Hogue, is located in Eastern Washington's Columbia Valley, the premier grape growing region of the state. The climate and soils of the Columbia Valley produce grapes with intense fruit flavors and high natural acidity. The wines have a liveliness and ripe, zesty fruit flavors that make them ideal complements to a wide range of foods.
