Winemaker Notes

Cherry-red color and slightly orange rim. Intense aromas of ripe fruit, with hints of vanilla and toasted wood, with jam coming through underneath. The palate is tasty, smooth, pleasant, spicy, and very well-balanced.

I love the classical nose of spice, berries and herbs of the 2016 Señorío de P. Peciña Crianza, a textbook ultra-classical Rioja that matured in used American oak barrels for 24 months, during which time it was racked by gravity every six months. These wines are fermented with indigenous yeasts and a soft vinification without much extraction of long macerations. It's expressive, polished and very pleasant, really what I expect in this style, with some developed notes and a gentle mouthfeel. 100,000 bottles produced. Very good introduction to a classical Crianza at a very attractive price.

Hailed as the star red variety in Spain’s most celebrated wine region, Tempranillo from Rioja, or simply labeled, “Rioja,” produces elegant wines with complex notes of red and black fruit, crushed rock, leather, toast and tobacco, whose best examples are fully capable of decades of improvement in the cellar.

Rioja wines are typically a blend of fruit from its three sub-regions: Rioja Alta, Rioja Alavesa and Rioja Oriental, although specific sub-region (zonas), village (municipios) and vineyard (viñedo singular) wines can now be labeled. Rioja Alta and Alavesa, at the highest elevations, are considered to be the source of the brightest, most elegant fruit, while grapes from the warmer and drier, Rioja Oriental, produce wines with deep color, great body and richness.
