Winemaker Notes

The Sangiovese is sourced from a gravelly riverbank of the Uvas Creek in the Santa Cruz Mountains. The vineyard is a perfect site to grow wine grapes as Native California grapes were already well-established along Uvas Creek when the first Missionaries arrived, hence the name "uvas", or "grape" in Spanish. These well-drained, sand and stone soils, coupled with the warm days and cool nights of the region create ideal circumstances for Sangiovese to thrive. Resulting in a savory wine with flavors and aromas of raspberry, bramble, herbs, blackberry, and cherry tart. An earthy, gamey wine with good structure and a grippy finish.

Try pairing with lamb chops, veal piccata, chicken, lasagna, marinara sauce, parmesan, and fontina.

Among Italy's elite red grape varieties, Sangiovese has the perfect intersection of bright red fruit and savory earthiness and is responsible for the best red wines of Tuscany. While it is best known as the chief component of Chianti, it is also the main grape in Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and reaches the height of its power and intensity in the complex, long-lived Brunello di Montalcino. Somm Secret—Sangiovese doubles under the alias, Nielluccio, on the French island of Corsica where it produces distinctly floral and refreshing reds and rosés.
