COMMENTARY: Syrah is far more complex than wine drinkers realize. Where it is grown and who makes the wines can be a significant factor of difference. The 2017 Harrington McEvoy Ranch Syrah drinks exceptionally well. TASTING NOTES: This is a soft-spoken version of the grape variety. Its aromas and flavors of black fruit are persistent and beautiful. Pair it with a slow-cooked beef stew and enjoy the match. (Tasted: September 25, 2018, San Francisco, CA)
Marked by an unmistakable deep purple hue and savory aromatics, Syrah makes an intense, powerful and often age-worthy red. Native to the Northern Rhône, Syrah achieves its maximum potential in the steep village of Hermitage and plays an important component in the Red Rhône Blends of the south, adding color and structure to Grenache and Mourvèdre. Syrah is the most widely planted grape of Australia and is important in California and Washington. Bordered by Napa and Sonoma Valleys to the north and the Golden gate Bridge to the south, most of the region’s vineyards are planted on Marin County’s western side where they are exposed to the moist and cold air of the Pacific Ocean. Varieties like Pinot noir and Chardonnay do well here.
