Winemaker Notes

The Nackenheimer Rothenberg is without question the most important site at the Gunderloch estate. It yields wines of striking mineral character paired with a broad spectrum of expressive spice and fruit aromas.

Complex nose with everything from mandarin orange and ripe melon to fresh basil, mint and tarragon notes. Still youthful, but it already shines. Elegant and filigree, as we expect from this terroir, with fine tannins discreetly underlining this. Long, delicate finish that has a stack of wild herb and wet stone minerality.

The 2021 Rothenberg Riesling GG is coolish, fresh and iodine-scented on the extremely pure, rocky, almost ethereal nose. Lush and substantial in its mineral structure and provided with just-ripe fruit but remarkable intensity and tension, this is a pure, vivacious, tight, linear and slim Rothenberg that can age terrifically but will never become a wine for hedonists. 12.5% stated alcohol.

Riesling possesses a remarkable ability to reflect the character of wherever it is grown while still maintaining its identity. A regal variety of incredible purity and precision, this versatile grape can be just as enjoyable dry or sweet, young or old, still or sparkling and can age longer than nearly any other white variety. Somm Secret—Given how difficult it is to discern the level of sweetness in a Riesling from the label, here are some clues to find the dry ones. First, look for the world “trocken.” (“Halbtrocken” or “feinherb” mean off-dry.) Also a higher abv usually indicates a drier Riesling.

Extending south from the Rheingau region to become a valley of gently rolling hills, Rheinhessen is Germany’s largest wine region. The best Rieslings of Rheinhessen, often characterized by smoky, peach and citrus aromas, come from vines grown in the red soils of the Rheinterrasse.
