Winemaker Notes

The Nackenheimer Rothenberg is without question the most important site at the Gunderloch estate. It yields wines of striking mineral character paired with a broad spectrum of expressive spice and fruit aromas.

The 2018 Riesling trocken Rothenberg GG opens with a coolish, deep and flinty, pure and fresh yet pretty intense Riesling nose that needs some aeration to open its fruit flavors. However, the Rothenberg is discreet in its very youth compared to the GGs from the Nierstein crus Pettenthal and Hipping. Silky, elegant and fresh on the palate, this is a pure, tight and salty medium to full-bodied dry Riesling for fans of ascetic, entirely terroir-driven wines. The Rothenberg is not a sensual or rich wine, but it is straight, linear and lean and on the finish—tightly structured and age-worthy. Tasted in May 2020.

Very tight at the moment, yet pure and precise, this reveals notes of peach and saffron with air, while a savory mineral element echoes in the background. Tough right now, but displays complexity and elegance, with a long and inviting finish. Best from 2023 through 2033.

Riesling possesses a remarkable ability to reflect the character of wherever it is grown while still maintaining its identity. A regal variety of incredible purity and precision, this versatile grape can be just as enjoyable dry or sweet, young or old, still or sparkling and can age longer than nearly any other white variety. Somm Secret—Given how difficult it is to discern the level of sweetness in a Riesling from the label, here are some clues to find the dry ones. First, look for the world “trocken.” (“Halbtrocken” or “feinherb” mean off-dry.) Also a higher abv usually indicates a drier Riesling.

Extending south from the Rheingau region to become a valley of gently rolling hills, Rheinhessen is Germany’s largest wine region. The best Rieslings of Rheinhessen, often characterized by smoky, peach and citrus aromas, come from vines grown in the red soils of the Rheinterrasse.
