Winemaker Notes

The Gallo family farms seven benchland vineyards in the Sonoma County appellations of Sonoma Coast, Dry Creek Valley, Alexander Valley, and Russian River Valley. Selected vineyard sites within our vineyard portfolio produce the grapes for all E & J Gallo Northern Sonoma Estate Bottled wines. Only the "best of the best" fruit from each vineyard is ever considered for possible inclusion in these, our finest cuvées. After an intense selection process in both the vineyards and winery, the final blend for our 1997 Estate Bottled Cabernet was 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from our Stefani Vineyard in the Dry Creek Valley of Sonoma County. This powerful wine displays pure flavors of black fruit and cassis, framed by the rich vanilla and toast flavors from over two years aging in French oak barrels.

While Sonoma County is acclaimed—and rightfully so—for its Chardonnays, Pinot Noirs, and Zinfandels, it also produces exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon. Of the region’s 18 American Viticultural Areas, only a handful produce top-notch Cabernet Sauvignon. These appellations include Alexander Valley, Knights Valley, Sonoma Valley and Dry Creek Valley. Sonoma Cabernet Sauvignons made in these appellations can offer a complex array of aromas and flavors. Fruit notes such as blackberry, blackcurrant, cassis, black cherry and raspberry often are accompanied by hints of graphite, dusty earth, cigar box, toast and vanilla. The varietal has a rich history in Sonoma, and some of these Cabernet Sauvignons and Cabernet-based blends rival the best from Napa Valley.
