Winemaker Notes

The aromatics of this classic field blend present a delightful challenge to the nose. Not exactly fresh fruit and not really jam, either. Rather, it's like a bunch of summer fruit—strawberry, raspberry, fig, and huckleberry - all conserved together in one aromatic package. It's sophisticated in the depth of its aroma profile and fun at the same time. The flavors are a big surprise as well - no jammy sweetness. Instead the wine is taut, refined and reminiscent of a very fine Tuscan Chianti and absolutely the right counterpoint to the aromas.

This wine promises great things for sophisticated culinary efforts a few years down the line, but in the meantime you'll love it with this summer's barbeques!

John Williams co-ferments his zin with petite sirah and a little carignan, all of the vines farmed organically and dry grown. This 2012 is fresh with bosky cherry fruit and briskness to the structure.

Undoubtedly proving its merit over and over, Napa Valley is a now a leading force in the world of prestigious red wine regions. Though Cabernet Sauvignon dominates Napa Valley, other red varieties certainly thrive here. Important but often overlooked include Merlot and other Bordeaux varieties well-regarded on their own as well as for their blending capacities. Very old vine Zinfandel represents an important historical stronghold for the region and Pinot noir is produced in the cooler southern parts, close to the San Pablo Bay.

Perfectly situated running north to south, the valley acts as a corridor, pulling cool, moist air up from the San Pablo Bay in the evenings during the hot days of the growing season, which leads to even and slow grape ripening. Furthermore the valley claims over 100 soil variations including layers of volcanic, gravel, sand and silt—a combination excellent for world-class red wine production.
