    Somm Note

    Winemaker Notes

Pale straw yellow with a green tinge. Aromas of pronounced tropical fruits, stone fruit and ripe melons complemented by a creamy nougat and cashew nut influence from the oak. The palate is lifted with fruit characters of white peach, nectarine and honeydew melon, with a bright natural acidity. The oak is subtle and well-integrated, providing attractive flavors of hazelnut, nougat and hints of soft vanilla spice. The palate finishes with a lingering toasty oak and refreshing acidity.

    Franklin Tate Estates, Australia

Located in the South West of Western Australia in the world-famous Margaret River region. Internationally recognized as one of Australia’s top growing regions for savory but supple reds and crisp wines of character and flavor – Margaret River is situated in a unique spot on the most western tip of Australia. Surrounded by two oceans – the Indian Ocean and Southern Ocean – Margaret River is stunningly beautiful. For the vineyards it is an exquisite environment – warm sunny mornings and cool afternoon breezes provide the best aspects of both warm and cool climates.

The Franklin Tate family believes this is the greatest wine region in Australia. John Tate along with his wife Toni and son Franklin, first went down to Margaret River to plant their first grapes in 1974. Over time John and Toni passed down a passion for growing and making Margaret River wine onto Franklin. In 2021, Franklin decided to expand his passion and tell his story, and the story of his parents, by founding Franklin Tate Estates. As he takes the knowledge and enthusiasm passed down to him, while he carves out his own path.

Committed to making wines of exceptional standing, redolent in character and truly expressive of the ‘terroir’ of the Margaret River wine region. FTE Director of Winemaking is Frederique Perrin. Formerly with LVMH, and most recently Cape Mentelle, she has travelled around the world making wine that truly represents the appellations from which the derive.

They are excited at the wines they are making, but in true modesty believe that the best is yet to come.

One of the most popular and versatile white wine grapes, Chardonnay offers a wide range of flavors and styles depending on where it is grown and how it is made. While it tends to flourish in most environments, Chardonnay from its Burgundian homeland produces some of the most remarkable and longest lived examples. California produces both oaky, buttery styles and leaner, European-inspired wines. Somm Secret—The Burgundian subregion of Chablis, while typically using older oak barrels, produces a bright style similar to the unoaked style. Anyone who doesn't like oaky Chardonnay would likely enjoy Chablis.

Home to some of Australia’s most elegant and long-lived red and white wines, Margaret River is situated in the farthest reaches of Western Australia. Relatively warm and dry, the region is cooled by breezes from the Indian Ocean. Margaret River takes some inspiration from Bordeaux, producing top-quality Cabernet Sauvignons and Bordeaux Blends with firm structure, mouthwatering acidity, balanced alcohol and notes of herbs and spice. For white wines, refreshing blends of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon as well as complex, age-worthy Chardonnays are regional specialties.
