Somm Note

Winemaker Notes

Deep purple in color. The fragrant nose displays aromas of lifted perfume characters from the Viognier combined with subtle dark berry fruit and a hint of spice and pepper. The palate is elegant and finely balanced displaying dense berry fruit, overtones of spice and finishing with some fine powdery tannins.

A classic partner to wood fired pizza, rack of lamb or barbequed grilled steak.

Earthy, meaty flavors border on gaminess, adding depth as the crisp blueberry fruit pushes through on the polished finish. Drink now through 2014. 6,500 cases imported.

Four Sisters, Australia
Four Sisters Winery Image
Four Sisters is the creation of Trevor Mast, owner and winemaker at Mount Langi Ghiran, world famous for its Langi Shiraz. One year his four daughters created the wine label design as a birthday surprise. Produced with the help of the eldest daughter Daliah, a graphic designer, the label depicts each one of the sisters – from the left they are Sophie, Anja, Daliah and Ineke.

Delighted with the label mock up and his daughters' plans for a wine aptly named Four Sisters, Trevor initially crafted a small production wine from the vineyard growing behind the family home. However, with the positive response from all who tried the wine and heard the original story behind it, Four Sisters is now a successful brand with a range of four classic Australian varieties.

Though Syrah originated in the Rhône Valley of France, Australia is home to the oldest Syrah (called Shiraz here) vines on the planet. Found in Australia’s Barossa Valley, where phylloxera has never threated viticulture, these ancient vines are between 140 to 175 years old!

Having brought fame and merit to the country’s wine scene since the early 1950s, namely via the debut of Penfolds Grange, today Syrah (Shiraz) claims rank as the most widely planted grape in Australia. In fact, the amount of land dedicated to Shiraz in Australia is now almost equivalent to what it is in France. Australian Shiraz has its own personality with flavors and aromas of intense blackberry, fruitcake, menthol, tobacco leaf and umami. Conveniently one can find great Australian Shiraz at a variety of price points but the very best will be dense, gloriously complex and capable of long aging.
