Winemaker Notes

The 2014 Chardonnay is a great representation of the world class Chardonnay of the Sta. Rita Hills AVA. Aromatics of clover honey, toasted vanilla, citrus, and floral notes are accompanied by a palate of classic, lean acidity with pops of fresh lemon and pineapple. This wine finishes with nuances of delicate oak and roasted hazelnut. Perfect paired with clam chowder or Chicken Dijon, this Chardonnay's combination of structure and concentration helps it stand up to a wide array of dishes, including poultry and rich fish and seafood, like crispy crab cakes garnished with green onion.

Light on the nose, this shows delicate aromas of Asian pear, honeysuckle, squeezed lemon wedge, fresh coconut flesh and a tiny bit of butter. The palate is also demure yet delicious, with lightly poached apples, squeezed lime and a chalky textural grip.

Well-focused, offering some rich briny notes to the green apple, citrus and pear flavors. Sleek and savory midpalate, with a crisp finish that is refined and provides plenty of minerality. Drink now through 2022

Get past this wine's initial toasty scent of oak and you'll find some delicious fruit; its sunny papaya flavor and salty, marine tang feel like textbook Santa Rita Hills chardonnay, capturing this high-elevation south-facing hillside vineyard with roots in marine sediments. Serve it as you would a rich albarino, with crispy head-on prawns.

One of the most popular and versatile white wine grapes, Chardonnay offers a wide range of flavors and styles depending on where it is grown and how it is made. While it tends to flourish in most environments, Chardonnay from its Burgundian homeland produces some of the most remarkable and longest lived examples. California produces both oaky, buttery styles and leaner, European-inspired wines. Somm Secret—The Burgundian subregion of Chablis, while typically using older oak barrels, produces a bright style similar to the unoaked style. Anyone who doesn't like oaky Chardonnay would likely enjoy Chablis.

A superior source of California Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, Sta. Rita Hills is the coolest, westernmost sub-region of the larger Santa Ynez Valley appellation within Santa Barbara County. This relatively new AVA is unquestionably one to keep an eye on.

The climate of Sta. Rita Hills is a natural match for Chardonnay and Pinot noir, thanks to the crisp ocean breezes and well-drained, limestone-rich calcareous soil. Here, grapes ripen just enough, while retaining brisk acidity and harmonious balance.
