WE 91
Wine Enthusiast
This Syrah-Garnacha blend is lush and dense, with attractive licorice and blackberry aromas. It’s lusty in the mouth, but balanced as it deals largescale blackberry, pepper, spice and bitter chocolate flavors. Toasty on the finish, with black coffee. A full-bodied winner that’s dynamic and overdelivers for the price.
WS 90
Wine Spectator
A subtle, balanced red, delivering firm tannins that are fleshed out by dark berry, plum and lots of spice. A touch of dark chocolate shows midpalate, and through to the lingering finish. Give this some air in the glass. Best from 2011 through 2017. 500 cases imported.

Finca Sandoval, Spain
Victor de la Serna's idea was to start a vineyard and winemaking project from scratch, planting top-notch Syrah vines which he felt had more potential than the local large-berried Bobal. Winery is located in Manchuela, Casa Blanca region, province of Cuenca, 140 miles southeast of Madrid. Grapes are sourced from two vineyards with a total of 26 acres planted by Mr. de la Serna. Soils have a dominant clay-limestone component and belong to four different types: sandy-clay (very shallow and very poor), silty-clay soil, deep claylimestone and clay-dominated clay limestone soil. The climate is very harsh continental.

Known for its bold, heady, rustic and age-worthy red wines, Spain is truly a one-of-a-kind wine-producing nation. A great majority of the country is hot, arid and drought-ridden, and since irrigation has only been recently introduced and (controversially) accepted, viticulture has sustained—and flourished—only through a great understanding of Spain’s particular conditions. Large spacing between vines allows each enough resources to survive and as a result, the country has the most acreage under vine compared to any other country, but is usually third in production.

Most planted and respected is Tempranillo, the star of Spain’s Rioja and Ribera del Duero regions. Priorat specializes in bold red blends, Jumilla has gained global recognition for its single varietal Monastrell and Utiel-Requena has garnered recent attention for its reds made of Bobal.
