Winemaker Notes

The 2019 Fess Parker Sta. Rita Hills Pinot Noir is garnet in appearance. Aromas of black cherry, sassafras, forest floor, baking spices, black tea, vanilla, and sandalwood make up the bouquet. This hand-crafted wine represents the best of what Sta. Rita Hills Pinot Noir has to offer. Bursting with flavors of spice, cranberry, light blueberry, and strawberry, it displays great balance and a lingering finish

Ripe nose displaying scents of red berries, sour cherry, violets and mushrooms. Smooth tannins, lush and vibrant, quite elegant with a persistent finish.

The rocky minerality aspect takes center stage in this appellation blend, beginning with wet soil and gravel aromas as well as light cherry and strawberry on the nose. That leads to a tightly woven palate, where the earthy aspects open slowly to reveal pomegranate and oregano flavors.

The base appellation 2019 Pinot Noir Sta. Rita Hills is outstanding, offering lots of spiced red fruits, underbrush, and peppery stem notes in a medium-bodied, clean, classy, balanced style. Drink it over the coming 4-6 years or so.

COMMENTARY: The 2019 Fess Parker Sta. Rita Hills Pinot Noir drinks famously well. TASTING NOTES: This wine shines with black fruit, light spice, and oak. Serve it with a mildly-seasoned, roast leg of lamb. (Tasted: April 14, 2021, San Francisco, CA)

Thin-skinned, finicky and temperamental, Pinot Noir is also one of the most rewarding grapes to grow and remains a labor of love for some of the greatest vignerons in Burgundy. Fairly adaptable but highly reflective of the environment in which it is grown, Pinot Noir prefers a cool climate and requires low yields to achieve high quality. Outside of France, outstanding examples come from in Oregon, California and throughout specific locations in wine-producing world. Somm Secret—André Tchelistcheff, California’s most influential post-Prohibition winemaker decidedly stayed away from the grape, claiming “God made Cabernet. The Devil made Pinot Noir.”

A superior source of California Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, Sta. Rita Hills is the coolest, westernmost sub-region of the larger Santa Ynez Valley appellation within Santa Barbara County. This relatively new AVA is unquestionably one to keep an eye on.

The climate of Sta. Rita Hills is a natural match for Chardonnay and Pinot noir, thanks to the crisp ocean breezes and well-drained, limestone-rich calcareous soil. Here, grapes ripen just enough, while retaining brisk acidity and harmonious balance.
