Winemaker Notes

With a brick hue color, this Pinot Noir shares black cherry, black raspberry, tobacco leaf, sandalwood, smoke, light pepper, cigar box, tarragon and forest floor aromas while fruit flavors of black cherry, red currant and cranberry combine with tarragon, mineral and milk chocolate on the palate. This year’s Parker West Vineyard Pinot Noir has good acidity and exceptional balance.

A rugged and feral quality marks the nose of this excellent wine. Black raspberry and plum aromas are laid across savory beef fat, dried sage and scents of mint, pencil lead and Indian spice. The mouthfeel is soft and the palate is meaty, with baked plum, black cherry, black cardamom and raw beef flavors, lifted by a minty quality.

From a site off Sweeney Canyon in the Sta. Rita Hills, the 2013 Parker West Vineyard (aged 18 months in 33% new French oak) offers gorgeous rose petal, spring flowers, raspberries and strawberry aromas and flavors. It's medium-bodied, fresh and lively, with nicely integrated acidity and great purity of fruit. Pretty, perfumed, floral and loaded with charm, drink it over the coming 5-6 years.

Thin-skinned, finicky and temperamental, Pinot Noir is also one of the most rewarding grapes to grow and remains a labor of love for some of the greatest vignerons in Burgundy. Fairly adaptable but highly reflective of the environment in which it is grown, Pinot Noir prefers a cool climate and requires low yields to achieve high quality. Outside of France, outstanding examples come from in Oregon, California and throughout specific locations in wine-producing world. Somm Secret—André Tchelistcheff, California’s most influential post-Prohibition winemaker decidedly stayed away from the grape, claiming “God made Cabernet. The Devil made Pinot Noir.”

A superior source of California Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, Sta. Rita Hills is the coolest, westernmost sub-region of the larger Santa Ynez Valley appellation within Santa Barbara County. This relatively new AVA is unquestionably one to keep an eye on.

The climate of Sta. Rita Hills is a natural match for Chardonnay and Pinot noir, thanks to the crisp ocean breezes and well-drained, limestone-rich calcareous soil. Here, grapes ripen just enough, while retaining brisk acidity and harmonious balance.
