Winemaker Notes

A very floral, perfumed, classic Pinot Noir nose: fruit, violets, spice and bramble, with nothing in excess. Creamy and weighty across the mid-palate, very flowing, almost juicy sweetness with just enough dusty tannins kicking in to complement a dark finish with hints of espresso and chocolate. Complete, complex and close to the ultimate expression for a Felton Road Pinot Noir.

Good deep red. Lovely high-pitched aromas and flavors of raspberry, orange peel, spices and flowers. At once sweet and penetrating, with bright acidity framing the wine's ripe flavors and giving it terrific Chambolle-like precision. Finishes with enticing floral and spicy perfume. Remarkably good for a basic pinot release.

The ensuing 2007 Pinot Noir has a very elegant, understated nose that takes time to peek its head over the horizon. At first, simple strawberry and dark cherry fruit but there is a subtle touch of undergrowth and charcoal. Good definition. The palate is medium-bodied, elegant, very harmonious with prudent, well integrated oak. Silky smooth and very pure on the finish, this is another classy Felton Road to cherish.

Felton Road Wines Ltd, in Bannockburn, Central Otago, New Zealand, has planted some of the world's southernmost vineyards. The expression, "growing on the edge," has real meaning in Central Otago, with the lowest rainfall and lowest temperatures of any agricultural region in New Zealand.

Central Otago is located on the southern end of New Zealand's South Island (latitude 45º south) and shares with Oregon (45º north) similar viticultural challenges: late frosts in Spring, early frost in Autumn, a growing season that may be curtailed overnight. Yet the climates of both are surprisingly similar to Burgundy's Côte d'Or: hot in summer, cold in winter. Central Otago is New Zealand's only wine region with a continental - rather than maritime - climate, which results in greater diurnal and seasonal shifts in temperature.

A large and diverse wine region in northeastern Italy, the Veneto is home to a vast array of different styles of wine. With no defining regional characteristics, it can be a bit confusing to the general consumer to parse through its many subzones, but the patient wine lover will find many treasures to be discovered here, typically at wallet-friendly prices. Red and white wines are produced here, with more emphasis on the latter, as well as the ultra-popular sparkling wine Prosecco. The region is sheltered from harsh northern European winters by the Alps, which form its northern border, but the climate is still relatively cool, making the Veneto ideal for white wine production.

Much of Italy’s Pinot Grigio hails from the Veneto, where it can range from neutral and inoffensive to crisp and refreshing. Soave, made primarily from the Garganega grape, has a reputation for producing relatively ordinary, bulk wines, but can be very elegant when yields are carefully monitored, with aromas of lemon, almond, and white flowers. Valpolicella is the region’s best-known red wine, with juicy, tart red cherry flavors derived from the Corvina grape. Recioto and Amarone wines made from dried grapes are a regional specialty and can be very intense, heady, and cerebral.
