Winemaker Notes

Ruby red color with rich and intense tones. Variety of aromatic herbs accentuated with generous notes of tobacco and wet earth (dry earth, as well), black currant and licorice. The palate manifests good consistency of medium-smooth tannins to ensure the lengthy ageing. Rich structure and weight and elegant breed on the finish.

The Fèlsina 2021 Fontalloro reveals an elegant bouquet with a streamlined character that delivers good intensity but never goes overboard. In fact, this vintage might be a little thinner than I remember past vintages being. But Sangiovese wears this slender style well and delivers lots of wild cherry and forest berry nuances along the way. You also get soft mineral tones and earthy iris root. This bottle should develop nicely with aging time in the cellar.

The nose has classic, delicate aromas of cherries, wild strawberry, blood orange, top soil and sage. On the palate, darker berries and more cherries contrast with a deeply earthy, bitter bite of citrus pith, while lithe acid flows past unifying tannins that are precise, but with a chalky toothiness.

Bright and fresh with a lovely energy. Aromas of orange peel, chocolate, cherries and cedar follow through to a medium body, firm tannins and crisp acidity with a crunchy finish. Will age nicely but already delicious.

The 2021 Fontalloro is terrific. This is classic Fontalloro, a wine that offers notable density along with the wilder personality of Sangiovese—partly from the Colli Senesi. As such, it is a somewhat rustic wine, but it’s one that will be a fine accompaniment at the dinner table. Leather, incense, tobacco and scorched earth complement a wine that shows the darker, wilder side of the variety. Pretty floral top notes appear with aeration. I would cellar this for a few years.

This is smoky, with a core of cherry, blackberry and plum flavors. Menthol, wild herbs and iron add accents and though this is supple, there's a solid structure of both bright acidity and moderate, dusty tannins, with fine balance and length. Sangiovese. Best from 2026 through 2042.

Legendary in Italy for its Renaissance art and striking landscape, Tuscany is also home to many of the country’s best red wines. Sangiovese reigns supreme here, as either the single varietal, or a dominant player, in almost all of Tuscany’s best.

A remarkable Chianti, named for its region of origin, will have a bright acidity, supple tannins and plenty of cherry fruit character. From the hills and valleys surrounding the medieval village of Montalcino, come the distinguished and age-worthy wines based on Brunello (Sangiovese). Earning global acclaim since the 1970s, the Tuscan Blends are composed solely of international grape varieties or a mix of international and Sangiovese. The wine called Vine Nobile di Montepulciano, composed of Prognolo Gentile (Sangiovese) and is recognized both for finesse and power.
