Winemaker Notes

The 2014 Far Niente Cabernet Sauvignon opens with beautifully lifted spice and black fruit aromatics-clove, anise, black cherry and blackberry-layered with a hint of rich oak. A round, supple entry leads to a silky, smooth midpalate. Cassis, clove, and toasted oak complement the black and red fruit flavors. Fine grained, age-worthy tannins provide structure to the dark, juicy finish.

Sourced largely from the Martin Stelling Vineyard, this is a supple, soft wine, with refined tannins. A zippy nose of rose and spice scents paves the way for more powerful leather saddle, cedar and black tea elements. Its fruit is wild and brambly, recalling blackberry and dark cherry with enviable succulence.

Dark berries and mushrooms with walnut undertones. Full body and lots of depth and richness. Hints of tile and stones. Beautiful. Yes. Try in 2020.

This wine caught our San Francisco panelists’ attention, as a cabernet that “speaks of its pedigree.” Francesca Maniace, of Commonwealth, said, “This is Oakville. The wine is cohesive, and everything goes where it should go.” Gianpaolo Paterlini, of Acquerello and 1760, found it “structured, powerful and young.” That youthfulness shows up in a mouthful of tannins, a little hard edged for now, even as the wine itself is silky and rich enough to encompass all of its plentiful black fruit. Bold, juicy and intense, this will be at its best in a decade.

Aromas of forest fruit with mineral and floral notes. Shows a good level of ripeness without the feeling of being overdone. A fresh attack, velvety and concentrated; a lush style with tannic backbone.

One of the iconic wineries of Napa Valley, this blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Petit Verdot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec has produced a relatively restrained and elegant 2014, with pure crème de cassis fruit, some incense, licorice and subtle background barrique. It is medium to full-bodied, with sweet tannin, plenty of charm, and a relatively velvety smooth finish with well-integrated tannins and wood. This is approachable now and should continue to evolve nicely for 15-20 years.

Showing all the hallmarks of a proper Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2014 Far Niente offers red fruit clarity in the aromas and on the palate. The wine's liveliness pairs in quite nice with lighter to heavier meat dishes. (Tasted: October 30, 2017, San Francisco, CA)

A noble variety bestowed with both power and concentration, Cabernet Sauvignon enjoys success all over the globe, its best examples showing potential to age beautifully for decades. Cabernet Sauvignon flourishes in Bordeaux's Medoc where it is often blended with Merlot and smaller amounts of some combination of Cabernet Franc, Malbecand Petit Verdot. In the Napa Valley, ‘Cab’ is responsible for some of the world’s most prestigious, age-worthy and sought-after “cult” wines. Somm Secret—DNA profiling in 1997 revealed that Cabernet Sauvignon was born from a spontaneous crossing of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc in 17th century southwest France.

Home to some of the most sought-after Cabernet Sauvignon in America, Napa Valley’s Oakville district stretches across the center of Napa's valley floor and foothills between the Vaca and Mayacamas Mountains. This AVA is home to the legendary To Kalon Vineyard and Martha's Vineyard, as well as many powerhouse wineries including Screaming Eagle, Silver Oak, Robert Mondavi, Opus One, Far Niente and Groth.

The climate is generally warm and agreeable, resulting in year after year of favorable vintages. Summer days see a gentle tug of war between warmer inland air and the cool air coming in from the San Pablo Bay, creating an ideal environment to grow red varieties. Oakville's diverse soils, namely ancient sea bedrock, clay and gravel, are well-drained, and perfect for high-caliber viticulture.

Cabernet here is often bottled varietally but is also popular in Bordeaux Blends. Oakville wines are known for their silky, sensual textures, structured tannins, dark and brooding fruit and lovely aromatics. These age-worthy and prestigious wines are favored by collectors throughout the world.
