Winemaker Notes

An intense color with a purple tinge, typical of this wine when young. The aromas is initially very intense and complex, showing clear notes of black fruit, raspberries, blackberries, and currants, all surrounded by spicy notes. After a short exposure to air, the complexity is enriched with subtle hints of violets and especially the classic aromas of roses emanating from the unique terroir. On the palate this vintage is more concentrated than previous years. Ripe tannins complemented by gorgeous complex fruit flavors and an exquisite soft velvety texture accentuate the classic subtle elegance and charm that is the signature of Espetacle. The finish is persistent and long, displaying all the aromatic richness of this extraordinary wine.

The 2020 Espectacle del Montsant has 15% alcohol, lower than the two previous vintages despite being a warmer year, and it has power and concentration (from the weather and the low yields from mildew), reaching a good concentration with freshness, which is the key to having a balanced 2020. The wine is floral, and the profile of fruit is more primary. It also has abundant, fine-grained tannins that are going to require some more time in bottle.

Nervy peppery nose with ethereal red berries, peppercorns and spices. Medium body on the palate with wild berries and firm tannins, delivering a nimble yet composed mouthfeel. A nice touch of bitter spices at the end.

Grenache thrives in any warm, Mediterranean climate where ample sunlight allows its clusters to achieve full phenolic ripeness. While Grenache's birthplace is Spain (there called Garnacha), today it is more recognized as the key player in the red blends of the Southern Rhône, namely Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Côtes du Rhône and its villages. Somm Secret—The Italian island of Sardinia produces bold, rustic, single varietal Grenache (there called Cannonau). California, Washington and Australia have achieved found success with Grenache, both flying solo and in blends.

Surrounding the region of Priorat on all sides, Montsant shares much in common with its neighbor. Though its soils contain less schist than that of Priorat, its old Garnacha and Carinena vineyards produce wines of similar intensity and character.
