Winemaker Notes

Its color is surprisingly intense compared to previous vintages. Bright, airy and deep, it delights us with a lush appearance in which clear violet notes on a ruby background can be distinguished. The wine initially evokes notes of red fruits on a well defined floral background. Rose and violet notes quickly appear. These are surrounded by increasing complexity in which cocoa and cassis are clearly distinguished. Gradually, as it aerates, the wine's aroma expands and characteristic notes of orange blossom appear. In the month it is opulent and very unctuous. Almost immediately its intense, agreeable texture caresses the palate giving very pleasant sensations and leaving us with a pleasant and long finish.

The cooler and more austere 2014 Espectacle del Montsant could have some similarities with 2008. It has beautiful floral aromas and hints of orange peel and wet stones. It has a serious, balanced and austere palate, a closer expression of Espectacle, with contained ripeness and an earthier, more mineral finish. It's very different from 2015, which is possibly a more classical expression of the vineyard, while this 2014 is quite unique and different. But I like this austerity very much. Around 6,000 bottles were filled from one 4,500-liter oak foudre. It was bottled in May 2016.

Grenache thrives in any warm, Mediterranean climate where ample sunlight allows its clusters to achieve full phenolic ripeness. While Grenache's birthplace is Spain (there called Garnacha), today it is more recognized as the key player in the red blends of the Southern Rhône, namely Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Côtes du Rhône and its villages. Somm Secret—The Italian island of Sardinia produces bold, rustic, single varietal Grenache (there called Cannonau). California, Washington and Australia have achieved found success with Grenache, both flying solo and in blends.

Surrounding the region of Priorat on all sides, Montsant shares much in common with its neighbor. Though its soils contain less schist than that of Priorat, its old Garnacha and Carinena vineyards produce wines of similar intensity and character.
