Winemaker Notes

This wine was conceived by thinking about how "Zeinfandall" might have been made and tasted, without aid of modern winemaking equipment, after it first arrived in California in 1852. This wine is more floral, shaped by whole-cluster fermentation. Serve it chilled.

Professional Ratings

Aromas of dried herbs, rose petals, salt and pepper meet lively raspberry and cranberry flavors in this medium- to full-bodied wine. Made by fermenting whole clusters, it has an appetizing nip of tannin to firm up the texture.

Unapologetically bold, spice-driven and jammy, Zinfandel has secured its title as the darling of California vintners by adapting well to the state's diverse microclimates and landscapes. Born in Croatia, it later made its way to southern Italy where it was named Primitivo. Fortunately, the imperial nursery of Vienna catalogued specimens of the vine, and it later made its way to New England in 1829. Parading the true American spirit, Zinfandel found a new home in California during the Gold Rush of 1849. Somm Secret—California's ancient vines of Zinfandel are those that survived the neglect of Prohibition; today these vines produce the most concentrated, ethereal and complex examples.

Growing some of California’s oldest plantings of Zinfandel, Fiddletown is a region of rolling hills surrounded by pine forests. While not many wineries reside within the AVA boundaries, a good number of Amador County wineries purchase Fiddletown grapes.
