Winemaker Notes

The grapes for this delicious Bordeaux-inspired blend come from several of the most prized estate and hillside vineyards in the Dry Creek Valley. At first swirl, the wine displays aromas of blueberry, vanilla, and cherries. Several more minutes reveal hints of clove, cinnamon, black licorice and mocha characters. The palate has dark berry flavors along with cedar sweetness and cassis. There's a good balance between juicy dark fruit and oak structure. The tannins are soft and supple with a very round and semi-oily texture. It finishes with black pepper, boysenberry and a hint of barrel spice. Good acidity will help this wine to age beautifully for years to come.

Blend: 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot, 8% Malbec, 4% Cabernet Franc

COMMENTARY: The Dry Creek Valley and Bordeaux grape varieties have been misunderstood by consumers and professionals alike. From my point of view, I have always looked at the elegance and the red fruit focus from these wines as opposed to the black fruits and firmness from their Napa Valley siblings. The 2013 Dry Creek Vineyard Mariner is quite nicely done and could easily be the poster child for Alexander Valley Bordeaux red style wines. TASTING NOTES: This wine is beautifully balanced. Its aromas and flavors of red fruit and savory spice make it a beautiful companion for a light salad of roast chicken, red cabbage, fresh mint, and accents of jalapeno. A proprietary blend of 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot and the rest Petit Verdot, Malbec and Cabernet Franc, the 2013 Proprietary Red The Mariner offers good blackcurrant fruit, new saddle leather, and toasty vanillin from the oak (about 40% is new). This attractive, medium-bodied, refreshing, Bordeaux-style wine should drink nicely for at least a decade.

This wine consists of all five red Bordeaux varieties, with 54% Cabernet Sauvignon making up the majority. A juicy front palate of cassis and blueberry leads to leathery, dusty tannins and notes of graphite, cedar and tea.

This is based on cabernet from the rolling hills of the winery’s Endeavor Vineyard and merlot grown on a hillside at Sapphire Canyon. Winemaker Tim Bell included some petit verdot and cabernet franc as well, along with 8 percent malbec to help smooth out what he found to be a particularly brawny vintage. It’s an inky, big-boned wine, with dense tannins, ripe flavors of blackberry and chocolate, and some appetizing herbal nuances at the edges. Hunter Hammett of San Francisco’s Jardinière suggested that its bold, hearty richness would be particularly appetizing with a medium-rare ribeye.

The origins of our nautical themed labels are purely personal. We have enjoyed a long love affair with the sport of sailing and have a profound appreciation of America’s nautical heritage. Combining two passions, we were inspired to use the sailing ship theme on our wine labels. In 1982, when the original idea was unveiled, it was seen as a rather daring and risky move. More than 30 years later, the sailing ships that adorn our wine bottles are easily identifiable and recognized by consumers around the world. Since the beginning, Sonoma County artist Michael Surles has provided the beautiful paintings for our labels. A multifaceted and highly reputable sub-region of Sonoma, Dry Creek Valley is responsible for a wide range of wine styles—both red and white. One of the smallest AVAs in California, Dry Creek Valley has a winning combination of ideal geography and climate. Fertile, well-drained soils create concentrated varietal character while long, warm days, bookended by cool nights, allow grapes to reach full phenolic ripeness and balance. The warm and welcoming appellation is home to a number of family-owned vineyards and wineries that place a strong emphasis on sustainable farming practices.

Zinfandel reigns supreme here and still produces in a great number of very old vineyards—often 100 years old or older. These old vines create a powerful, voluptuous and sultry wine unlike those of any other region. Sauvignon Blanc, the valley’s signature white grape, also performs exceptionally well. Many other varieties grow comfortably here, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache and Syrah. Petite Sirah is often found in blends with Zinfandel.

Bordeaux Blends

One of the world’s most classic and popular styles of red wine, Bordeaux-inspired blends have spread from their homeland in France to nearly every corner of the New World, especially in California, Washington and Australia. Typically based on either Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot and supported by Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot, these are sometimes referred to in the US as “Meritage” blends. In Bordeaux itself, Cabernet Sauvignon dominates in wines from the Left Bank of the Gironde River, while the Right Bank focuses on Merlot. Often, blends from outside the region are classified as being inspired by one or the other.

In the Glass

Cabernet-based, Left-Bank-styled wines are typically more tannic and structured, while Merlot-based wines modeled after the Right Bank are softer and suppler. Cabernet Franc can add herbal notes, while Malbec and Petit Verdot contribute color and structure. Wines from Bordeaux lean towards a highly structured and earthy style whereas New World areas (as in the ones named above) tend to produce bold and fruit-forward blends. Either way, Bordeaux red blends generally have aromas and flavors of black currant, cedar, plum, graphite, and violet, with more red fruit flavors when Merlot makes up a high proportion of the blend.

Perfect Pairings

Since Bordeaux red blends are often quite structured and tannic, they pair best with hearty, flavorful and fatty meat dishes. Any type of steak makes for a classic pairing. Equally welcome with these wines would be beef brisket, pot roast, braised lamb or smoked duck.

Sommelier Secret

While the region of Bordeaux is limited to a select few approved grape varieties in specified percentages, the New World is free to experiment. Bordeaux blends in California may include equal amounts of Cabernet Franc and Malbec, for example. Occassionally a winemaker might add a small percentage of a non-Bordeaux variety, such as Syrah or Petite Sirah for a desired result.
