Winemaker Notes

This young wine is presently tightly coiled with a long future in store. With a little air, the wine displays classically reductive notes of gunflint, alongside a fascinating mélange of rich tropical yellow fruits (mango, pineapple, passion fruit), stone fruits, (nectarine, apricot), melons, golden delicious apples, and ripe pear. The fruit aromas are lifted by notes of white flowers, minerals, graphite, fresh herbs (basil, tarragon, thyme) and hints of baking spice (vanilla, nutmeg, and clove). On the palate the wine opens slowly, but forcefully, with rich, mouth-filling waves of tropical fruits, stone fruits, and spices, mingling with minerals, flowers, citrus notes (Texas red grapefruit, lemon zest orange peel). The wine is medium to full-bodied and intriguing; the citrus and acids holding the fruits and minerals aloft on the long, penetrating finish.

A remarkable white wine, the 2014 Dragonette Vogelzang Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc offers a full range of beautiful aromas and flavors—dried citrus peel, chalk, mineral, and savory herbs—that is often missing in other efforts. In the midst of tasting over 50 wines, this wine was the most memorable. I am looking forward to learning more about this cool Central Coast producer. (Tasted: April 17, 2017, San Francisco, CA)

Capable of a vast array of styles, Sauvignon Blanc is a crisp, refreshing variety that equally reflects both terroir and varietal character. Though it can vary depending on where it is grown, a couple of commonalities always exist—namely, zesty acidity and intense aromatics. This variety is of French provenance. Somm Secret—Along with Cabernet Franc, Sauvignon Blanc is a proud parent of Cabernet Sauvignon. That green bell pepper aroma that all three varieties share is no coincidence—it comes from a high concentration of pyrazines (herbaceous aromatic compounds) inherent to each member of the family.

On the eastern end of the Santa Ynez Valley, the rolling hills of the tiny Happy Canyon AVA produce top quality reds from Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Syrah and whites from Sauvignon blanc. The region’s low-nutrient soil grows smaller vines and in turn, higher quality wine grapes.
