Winemaker Notes

Domaine Terlato & Chapoutier is a collaboration between legendary French wine grower, Michel Chapoutier and wine industry icon, Anthony Terlato. This Shiraz is from the Malakoff vineyard which has been hailed as one of Australia’s benchmarks. It displays the black fruit aromas, concentration and firm structure that are the hallmark of this varietal.

Intense red color, the wine shows complex and intense aromas of forest fruits (blueberries and wild cherries), hints of chocolate and mint. In the mouth, the wine is full bodied, slightly woody. Persistent and juicy tannins with a long lasting finish.

Coming from a hot year, the inky color 2013 Shiraz Lieu-Dit Malakoff offers gorgeous amounts of crème de cassis, blueberries, crushed violets, a kiss of mint, and ample roasted herb-like aromas and flavors. Full-bodied, lusty, hedonistic and utterly sexy, with no hard edges, this killer Shiraz can be drunk today with incredible pleasure or cellared for 10-15 years.

Bold and tannic style of shiraz. Plenty of herb-wrapped black fruits and chewy tannins. Needs some time. Best from 2022.

Slightly lighter on its feet than its sibling, L-Block, the Lieu-Dit shows more meat and black olive characters combined with ripe cherry, chocolate, cola, and oak spice. The palate is tangy and herbal while the powerful tannins are fine grained and the acidity well balanced. This should age rather nicely. Drink 2019–2037.

Domaine Terlato & Chapoutier combines the vision of Anthony J. Terlato, the founder of luxury importer and marketer Terlato Wines International, and Michel Chapoutier, the esteemed Rhône grower and vintner whose compelling wines have been exalted by critics around the world. The origin of the Terlato & Chapoutier partnership in Australia dates back to 1998, when Chapoutier enthusiastically told Terlato about a top vineyard site in Australia. Located on an eastern-facing slope on the southern edge of the Pyrenees Hills in western Central Victoria, the region’s unique iron-rich and schist soils could produce “great wines,” according to Chapoutier, and the resulting single-vineyard Shiraz from the "Malakoff" vineyard and Shiraz-Viognier blend have been highly lauded since their release in 2006.

Though Syrah originated in the Rhône Valley of France, Australia is home to the oldest Syrah (called Shiraz here) vines on the planet. Found in Australia’s Barossa Valley, where phylloxera has never threated viticulture, these ancient vines are between 140 to 175 years old!

Having brought fame and merit to the country’s wine scene since the early 1950s, namely via the debut of Penfolds Grange, today Syrah (Shiraz) claims rank as the most widely planted grape in Australia. In fact, the amount of land dedicated to Shiraz in Australia is now almost equivalent to what it is in France. Australian Shiraz has its own personality with flavors and aromas of intense blackberry, fruitcake, menthol, tobacco leaf and umami. Conveniently one can find great Australian Shiraz at a variety of price points but the very best will be dense, gloriously complex and capable of long aging.
