Winemaker Notes

Terra de Promissio vineyard is a premier winemaking destination located in Petaluma, California. Boasting 50 acres of carefully tended vines, this vineyard is known for its outstanding Pinot Noir grapes, grown from a variety of clones including Dijon 115 and 777, 943, 97, and Field Blend. The unique terroir of Terra de Promissio, including its southwest sun exposure, hill elevation, and proximity to the Petaluma Gap, creates the perfect conditions for slow grape maturation and extended hang time. This results in grapes that are perfectly ripe and bursting with flavor, making for exceptional and age-worthy wines.

Bright and buoyant aromas of raspberries, cocoa powder, rose petals and cinnamon waft from the glass on the nose of this Pinot. The palate shows electric acidity, powder fine tannin and explosive flavors of Bing cherry, orange peel, Darjeeling and flowers that move and shake across the long finish.

The 2023 Domaine Della Terra de Promissio Pinot Noir is subtle yet fulfilling from start to finish. This wine brings aromas and flavors of subtle chalk, fragrant earth, and hints of oak. Prepare a leg of lamb with rosemary sprigs, minced garlic, and cracked whole black peppercorns, roast, call a few Pinot Noir aficionados, and enjoy. (Tasted: April 18, 2025, San Francisco, CA)

A good, firm structure of tannins and vivid acidity liven up this black-fruited, well-balanced and concentrated wine. It’s full-bodied but doesn’t get heavy due to the tangy fruit flavors and moderate tannins. Black cherry, dried blueberry, black tea and pine forest flavors linger long in the finish.

From the Sonoma Coast, the 2023 Pinot Noir Terra Di Promissio has a medium ruby hue and is pretty on the nose, with aromas of wild strawberries, blue flowers, bay leaf, and brambly fresh earth. This medium-bodied Pinot Noir has a more linear feel, with a refreshing level of tension, fine tannins, salty earth, and even acidity. It has a lovely savory feel from the Coast and should improve over the coming 6-8 years.

This is generous and open in feel, with gently steeped cherry, raspberry and mulberry fruit that splays out slowly, infused with red tea and anise notes through the seductive finish.

The Sonoma Coast AVA is large in area but, not counting overlapping regions like Russian River Valley, only has a few thousand acres of grapevines—and it’s no wonder. Much of the region is rugged and not easily accessible. Its proximity to the Pacific Ocean’s fog and cool breezes limits the varieties that can be cultivated, but it proves to be an ideal environment for high quality Pinot Noir.

Since fog is a frequent fact of life here, as are heavy marine layers that sometimes bring rain, the best vineyards are wisely planted above the fog line, on picturesque ridges that capture enough sun to provide even ripening. That, with the overnight drop in temperature that reliably preserves acidity, results in fine expressions of Pinot Noir that often receive tremendous critic and consumer praise alike, and are often in high demand.
