Winemaker Notes

Le Nain Violet (The Purple Dwarf) is low-yielding, old vine Grenache, 90% of which is sourced from vineyards planted pre 1950. This is an inky black wine with vivid blackberry, wild berry, pepper and spice. It is strikingly deep and concentrated with a long persistent finish and a delicate minerality drawn from the broken schist soils.

Richard’s 2012 Cotes Catalanes Le Nain Violet is a brilliant success in the vintage. Made all from Grenache (from miniscule yields of 10-12 hectoliters per hectare) and aged 18 months in 20% new 500-liter barrels, it offers gorgeous lavender, pepper and violets to go with a core of kirsch and sweet blackberry-like fruit. Full-bodied, layered and seamless, with polished tannin and a taut, energetic vibe, it can be consumed anytime over the coming 7-8 years, if not longer.

The Pertuisane story begins in the foothills of the Pyrennées. In 2002, winemaker Richard Case and his wife Sarah staked their future on two hectares of ancient Grenache and Carignan vines surrounding the village of Maury. Convinced of its truly exceptional terroir, they added eight more hectares in time for the 2003 harvest resulting in the first small run of high-quality, handcrafted wine. These trailblazers have been making stunning wines from these Schiste soils ever since and the value is amazing.

An extensive appellation producing a diverse selection of good quality and great values, Languedoc spans the Mediterranean coast from the Pyrenees mountains of Roussillon all the way to the Rhône Valley. Languedoc’s terrain is generally flat coastal plains, with a warm Mediterranean climate and frequent risk of drought.

Virtually every style of wine is made in this expansive region. Most dry wines are blends with varietal choice strongly influenced by the neighboring Rhône Valley. For reds and rosés, the primary grapes include Grenache, Syrah, Carignan, Cinsault and Mourvèdre. White varieties include Grenache Blanc, Muscat, Ugni Blanc, Vermentino, Macabéo, Clairette, Piquepoul and Bourbelenc.

International varieties are also planted in large numbers here, in particular Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon.

The key region for sparkling wines here is Limoux, where Blanquette de Limoux is believed to have been the first sparkling wine made in France, even before Champagne. Crémant de Limoux is produced in a more modern style.

Grenache thrives in any warm, Mediterranean climate where ample sunlight allows its clusters to achieve full phenolic ripeness. While Grenache's birthplace is Spain (there called Garnacha), today it is more recognized as the key player in the red blends of the Southern Rhône, namely Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Côtes du Rhône and its villages. Somm Secret—The Italian island of Sardinia produces bold, rustic, single varietal Grenache (there called Cannonau). California, Washington and Australia have achieved found success with Grenache, both flying solo and in blends.
