Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2016 Sous le Chêne is the first vintage of this special bottling that originates from a portion of the vineyard right below a large oak tree that Parr and Moorman feel always displays very different characteristics to the rest of La Côte. It's certainly quite distinct this year, opening in the glass with a ravishingly ethereal bouquet of damson, strawberry, rose petal and peony, pure and ethereal. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, silky and expansive, with incredibly fine tannins and a long, lingering and saline finish. This is even silkier and more detailed than the regular La Côte bottling.

Domaine de la Cote, California
Domaine de la Côte translates literally to Estate of the Slope. Our Domaine is a collection of vineyards planted over 60 acres of a south-facing slope at the western edge of the Sta. Rita Hills appellation. Memorious, Bloom’s Field, Siren’s Call, Clos Juliet, and La Côte are the names of our vineyards. Rising to an elevation of 700 feet above the Santa Ynez River, the Domaine sits atop a 25 million year old seabed, 7 miles from the Pacific Ocean. The vineyards are planted entirely to California heritage selections at extremely high vine densities between 4,000 and 7,000 vines per acre. Although the Domaine spans a mere 60 acres, the diversity of its climats is staggering: each vineyard has a unique geology, aspect, elevation and microclimate. Such distinct expressions of site in such close proximity is unparalleled in California. The Domaine was organically farmed from 2007 through 2016. The 2017 growing season marks our transition to biodynamic practices. We make wine with the philosophy of “add nothing; take nothing away.” The wines are vinified, raised, and bottled at our winery in Lompoc, California, 3 miles from the Domaine.

A superior source of California Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, Sta. Rita Hills is the coolest, westernmost sub-region of the larger Santa Ynez Valley appellation within Santa Barbara County. This relatively new AVA is unquestionably one to keep an eye on.

The climate of Sta. Rita Hills is a natural match for Chardonnay and Pinot noir, thanks to the crisp ocean breezes and well-drained, limestone-rich calcareous soil. Here, grapes ripen just enough, while retaining brisk acidity and harmonious balance.
