Winemaker Notes

This parcel within the village appellation of Chambolle Musigny is situated at the southern limit of the territories of Chambolle and Vosne Romanée in the locality of the Combe d'Orveau. It was bequeathed by Louis Gros on his death in 1951 to his son François.

The origin of the word "Orveau" comes from "Val d'Or" (small golden vale). East facing, this coomb opens onto the anticlinal valley where Echezeaux, Grands Echezeaux and Clos de Vougeot are situated.

The climate is more extreme due to its geographical situation (colder in winter, hotter in summer). The wooded surroundings, which are battling erosion, contribute to a more humid autumn. This 1.10 ha parcel is composed equally of 45 year old vines and 6 year old vines. The soil, which is very stony, rich in scree and extremely fine-grained, rests on a substrata of white marl.

The Gros 2006 Chambolle-Musigny La Combe d’Orveau – from high above the Clos Vougeot, but in a fog-trapping and therefore rot-prone dimple that in this instance necessitated relatively early harvest – displays brightness and purity of red fruits typical for this bottling, as well as chalky and saline mineral notes. The texture is silken and the wine's modest endowment of tannins well woven-in. The virtues of the vintage seem perfectly suited to the virtues of this site, and one ends up with a wine impeccably pure, uplifting and invigorating if not especially complex, and best suited to enjoying over the next 4-5 years.

Domaine Anne Gros, France
Domaine Anne Gros Winery Image
Subtle, harmonious, supple—Burgundy from Domaine Anne Gros is intimately tied with the elegant and poised character of wines from Vosne-Romanée. While each cru faithfully reflects its terroir, it is terroir as translated through Gros’ expert touch, offering richer aromatics, rounder curves, silkier tannins. The combination is irresistible, so much so that Gros’ very limited production is snapped up by global collectors faster and faster each vintage. Anne Gros simply is one of the top winemakers in Burgundy today, which explains why her wines have inspired such a cult-like following. Importantly for us, Gros personifies the sort of winemaker with whom we have always sought to work: an artisan with a clear vision of her terroir and talents, and the grace to be humble despite the weight of Burgundian tradition and family history. Anne Gros took over her father’s winery (Domaine François Gros) in the late 1980s. Yet there have been Gros family members in Vosne since the 1830s; land holdings have split among family members for generations. Today, there are four separate wineries in Vosne owned by the extended Gros family, including Domaine Anne Gros: Gros Frere et Soeur, Anne-Francoise Gros and Michel Gros, all of whom are Anne’s cousins.

Thin-skinned, finicky and temperamental, Pinot Noir is also one of the most rewarding grapes to grow and remains a labor of love for some of the greatest vignerons in Burgundy. Fairly adaptable but highly reflective of the environment in which it is grown, Pinot Noir prefers a cool climate and requires low yields to achieve high quality. Outside of France, outstanding examples come from in Oregon, California and throughout specific locations in wine-producing world. Somm Secret—André Tchelistcheff, California’s most influential post-Prohibition winemaker decidedly stayed away from the grape, claiming “God made Cabernet. The Devil made Pinot Noir.”

Chambolle-Musigny Wine

Cote de Nuits, Burgundy

View all products

Chambolle-Musigny represents the charm of the Côte de Nuits district of Burgundy. But you’ll find that term mainly in reference to the vineyards in its southern stretches, which border Clos Vougeot: the Grand Cru of Le Musingy and in part, its neighboring and most exceptional Premier Cru, Les Amoureuses. Some producers argue for the primacy of Les Amoureuses and its eligibility for Grand Cru status given its wines can sometimes surpass other Grands Crus.

Le Musigny ranks on par with the most acclaimed Grands Crus for Pinot Noir: Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, Richebourg, Chambertin, and Chambertin-Clos de Bèze. It is also the only Grand Cru in Côte de Nuits for Chardonnay. All of the others are in Côte de Beaune.

This village can in fact claim only two Grands Crus vineyards and—in the context of breaking down the minutiae—they are markedly different. Bonnes-Mares, the other one at the far northern end above the village, bordering Morey-St-Denis, offers power, strength and great aging potential. But Chambolle-Musigny includes a nice handful of exceptional Premiers Crus, as noted above with Les Amoureuses as the finest. Le Fuees and Les Cras are other noteworthy Premiers Crus.

Overall, a top Chambolle-Musigny offers pure aromas of violets, dark cherry and damp earth, coupled with a velvety elegance, supple mid-palate, an abundance of black and red berry, and finesse and power through a long and fine-grained finish.
