DeLoach O.F.S. Pinot Noir 2008 Front Label
DeLoach O.F.S. Pinot Noir 2008 Front Label

Winemaker Notes

The OFS (Our Finest Selection) Pinot Noir typifies a quintessential Pinot Noir from the Russian River Valley. Generous aromas of blackberry and raspberry lift out of the glass. The aromas unfold to fresh berries mingling with rose petals towards the front of the palate, followed by undertones of cola, leather, and black tea in the mid to back palate. This seductively layered wine is perfectly balanced with its fine acids and medium bodied soft tannins, resulting in a wine that is approachable upon release as well as a wine that will continue to develop beautiful nuances with age. Enjoy with roasted port tenderloin with fingerling potatoes or grilled rack of lamb with honey mustard glaze.

This top selection from DeLoach has enough fresh, lively fruit to balance the smokiness of the vintage, turning it toward minerality. The finish is taut and tannic for now, with enough fruit to lend it charm. Decant for a seared ribeye.

While the Russian River Valley is a large appellation with multiple climate zones and soil types, it is best known for cool-climate varieties, with Pinot Noir as the most celebrated. The grapes benefit from a reliable late afternoon flow of Pacific Ocean fog through the Petaluma Gap and along the Russian River Valley that ensures slow and steady ripening and the preservation of grape acidity. Today many of California’s most highly regarded Pinot Noir vineyards are in the Russian River Valley, along with its sub-appellation, Green Valley.

Historically Russian River Valley Pinot Noirs had bright red fruit and delicate earthy, mineral notes. But changes in viticultural and winemaking practices have led to stylistic changes in some of the region’s wines. Adjustments to canopy management, among other techniques, have resulted in riper fruit and bolder wines as well. These show flavors of black cherry, blackberry, cola, spice and darker, loamy earth tones, accenting traditional Pinot Noir notes of strawberry, raspberry and light cherry.
