Winemaker Notes

The Hermitage Domaine des Tourettes is the first wine to be produced by Delas Freres exclusively from the 8.5 hectares that farmed on the famous hill that overlooks the town of Tain.

The wine has a brilliant, deep red hue. The nose is powerful and complex, expressing blackberries, spices and leather. On the palate the wine is firm but silky, with a tightly-knit tannic structure that is the hallmark of wines that have a good future.

Pair this wine with rare or medium-cooked games, marinated meats and spicy stews. We recommend opening this bottle between one and three hours before drinking

Leading off the two Hermitage releases, the 2016 Hermitage Domaine Des Tourettes comes from the Bessards (the bottom part) and les Grandes Vignes, which are both granite soils. Black raspberries, cassis, burning embers, saddle leather and graphite characteristics all emerge from this opulent, concentrated, impressively textured Hermitage. It has plenty of structure, yet the tannins are sweet, and I suspect it will be approachable at a reasonable age.

Based on the granitic western side of the appellation, the 2016 Hermitage Domaine des Tourettes sees about one-third new oak, which has given it a cedary cast. It's dark and savory, showing hints of grilled meat, espresso and black olives, but it's also supple on the palate, ending ripe and plush.

Solidly built, with juicy and engaging raspberry, red currant and blackberry fruit flavors spreading out from the core, picking up anise, incense, mineral and floral accents along the way. The structure is fine-grained, with fresh acidity lingering nicely. Best from 2023 through 2035.

Sourced mainly from Les Bessards, with a portion from Les Grandes Vignes at the very top of the Hermitage hill, this pulls a lot of its initial richness from oak, notes of smoky bacon, vanilla and graham crackers making it an instant crowd-pleaser. Give it a few hours and it reveals what may be clearer with age: notes of leather, licorice root and spice, as well as a tart red-cherry flavor that keeps the wine feeling fresh. Drink it now with some- thing meaty, like sauerbraten, or age it to let the oak influence mellow.

Delas Freres Winery Video

Founded over 160 years ago, Delas Frères was acquired by Champagne Deutz in 1977.

Delas Frères cultivates vineyards on the steep granite slopes of the northern Rhône, in some of the region's most prestigious appellations. Additional grapes are supplied through long-term agreements with southern Rhone growers dedicated to providing only top quality grapes.

Crafted by winemaker Jacques Grange to epitomize finesse and elegance, recent Delas Frères vintages from the vineyards of Hermitage, Crozes-Hermitage, Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Côte Rôtie, Condrieu, Côtes-du-Rhône and Côtes-du-Ventoux have won renewed praise for their intensity of flavor and excellent value.

Marked by an unmistakable deep purple hue and savory aromatics, Syrah makes an intense, powerful and often age-worthy red. Native to the Northern Rhône, Syrah achieves its maximum potential in the steep village of Hermitage and plays an important component in the Red Rhône Blends of the south, adding color and structure to Grenache and Mourvèdre. Syrah is the most widely planted grape of Australia and is important in California and Washington. Sommelier Secret—Such a synergy these three create together, the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre trio often takes on the shorthand term, “GSM.”

One of the smallest and most important Syrah regions of northern Rhone, Hermitage is practically one single south-facing slope of crushed granite, thinly covered with varied, yet well-charted soil types. Many climats (well identified parcels) exist within Hermitage and while some smaller producers make single climat Syrahs, some larger ones blend to make one balanced expression of the appellation.

Though the AC regulations allow the addition of up to 15% white grapes to a red Hermitage, in practice it is usually made from Syrah alone. Winemaking is pretty traditional—or you might say historic—with hot fermentations and aging in older barrels of various sizes. The best wines, characterized by deep, dense and sexy flavors of black fruit, cocoa, licorice and tobacco, have massive textures and a solid 10-20 years aging potential.

The region of Hermitage is totally enclosed; the only place it could go really is to literally fall down its own hill into the city of Tain or the Rhone River. Soil erosion is a problem and terraces exist alongside the hill in order to keep the earth in place. Crozes-Hermitage encloses the region entirely to its north and south.

While Hermitage seems synonymous with some of the best Syrah on the planet, actually about one third of the wine produced here comes from white grapes. The full, lush and robust Marsanne or the less common, but almost more charming, Roussanne create wonderful whites in which the best have great potential for aging, like the reds.
